ASTOR, JOHN JACOB
, fur trader, businessman, and real estate investor. Astor began life as one of twelve children of a poor German butcher and died the richest man in America. The making of a great fortune was the aim and purpose of Astor's life, and he accomplished it by dominating the American fur trade and investing his profits in the real estate of burgeoning New York City. Shortly before his death, Astor was asked if he would have done anything differently with his life. He is supposed to have replied that his only regret was not having bought all of Manhattan. Astor was born in the small town of Waldorf, near Heidelberg, Germany. At twenty he followed his older brother Henry to New York, arriving with hardly a penny. He became a clerk to a fur trader and mastered that business quickly. His employer was impressed with Astor's intelligence and energy and entrusted him with more and more responsibilities, including buying furs upstate and selling them in London. Before long Astor was operating on his own account and prospered at once. He began putting his profits into Manhattan real estate, investing nearly $7,000, a large sum of money in those days, between 1789 and 1791. Astor's strategy was to buy, very cheaply, land that lay far beyond the developed area of the city and then to wait for the city's rapid growth to reach his lots. In 1803, for instance, he paid $25,000 for seventy acres located more than an hour's ride north of what were then the city's physical limits. By the 1870s the land was worth $20 million to the Astor family. Today the area is known as Times Square.

, German-born merchant, fur trader, and financier. Astor organized a lucrative fur trade with China and formed the American Fur Company to capitalize on the newly acquired lands of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1811 he built a trading post at the mouth of the Columbia River, naming it Astoria, a claim later used by the U.S. government to establish control over the Oregon Territory . Astor invested his fur-trading profits in Manhattan real estate, becoming the wealthiest man in the country. When he died, he left an estate variously estimated at between $20 million and $40 million.

Astor, John Jacob —1763-1848 John Jacob Astor was born in Waldorf, Germany in 1763 and emigrated to the New World at the close of the Revolutionary War, when he was 21. He arrived in Baltimore, penniless, but was shrewd and ambitious. He opened a small fur shop in 1786 in New York City and soon became a leader of the China trade.
In 1790, John Jacob Astor married Sarah Todd, whose mother was a Brevoort. Sarah Todd met Astor when she came to buy furs to make herself a coat. Her ability to judge furs and make them up won the heart of the dealer. The marriage brought young Astor into "the best Dutch New York society." This marriage was a business partnership as well as marital and proved a success in every way. His AMERICAN FUR COMPANY (1808) created the first American monopoly on the fur trade in U.S. territories. The Lewis and Clark Expeditions had opened his eyes to new opportunities in the Northwest Territories. He sent out two expeditions of his own to establish a fur trading post at Fort Astor, which eventually became the city of Astoria, Oregon. " You should buy Manhatten, they aren't making anymore of it."

http://search.eb.com/titanic/astor.html
Astor Family wealthy American family whose fortune, rooted in the fur trade, came to be centred on real estate investments in New York City. John Jacob Astor (1763-1848) was the founder of the family fortune. His son, William Backhouse Astor (1792-1875), who inherited the major portion of the estate, continued his father's program of investing in Manhattan real estate, and greatly expanded the Astor Library. Stung by accusations that he was a slum landlord, he attempted to renovate some of the older tenements owned by the Astors. At the same time, he more than doubled the family fortune, leaving an estate valued at nearly $50,000,000. John Jacob Astor (1822-90), son of William Backhouse Astor, increased the fortune to between $75,000,000 and $100,000,000. But he was a more active philanthropist than his predecessors, making substantial gifts to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Trinity Church as well as to the Astor Library. His son, William Waldorf Astor (1848-1919), was politically ambitious, but after a stint in the New York state legislature and three years as U.S. minister to Italy, he moved permanently to England in 1890. He became a British subject in 1899 and, in 1917, became 1st Viscount Astor, of Hever Castle. He used much of his wealthaside from that spent building the Waldorf section of what eventually became the Waldorf-Astoria Hotelrestoring Hever Castle and funding conservative political causes in England.
