Review
This encyclopedia contains some 500 articles, arranged alphabetically from "abortion" to "Yeats, William Butler." Levental (British history, Boston U.) chose the material partly to reflect his own interests in social and cultural history, the history of the labor movement, and in music and art, but did not attempt to impose a universal style on contributors and included entries related to most major other aspects of 20th century British history. The New Oxford Annotated Bible with the Apocrypha We should have a great many fewer disputes in the world if only words were taken for what they are, the signs of our ideas only, and not for things themselves. John Locke (1632-1704) As the language of the face is universal, so 'tis very comprehensive; no laconism can reach it: 'tis the short hand of the mind, and crowds a great deal in a little room. Of a middle-class family, he attended Oxford, became a barrister in London in 1876, and was elected to Parliament as a Liberal in 1886. He attracted attention as junior counsel for Charles Parnell In the next six years Asquith's government put through an advanced program of social welfare legislation, including old-age pensions (1908) and unemployment insurance (1911). It also embarked on a program of naval expansion to match Germany's. To finance both programs, Asquith's chancellor of the exchequer, David Lloyd George , introduced (1909) a radical budget that was rejected by the House of Lords. This caused a constitutional crisis. After two general elections (Jan. and Dec., 1910), Asquith secured passage of the Parliament Act of 1911, which stripped the House of Lords of its veto power (see Parliament ). If you made a Top Ten list, what would be on your list? Recently, a man shot innocent young people in a church in Texas because of something the man did not like. What do you suppose was on his list of things that he wanted? What do you suppose the survivors in Texas want today? If you had to choose between being perfectly healthy with a perfect body, or having a perfect spirit with a perfect heart, which would it be and why? Here is an essential truth. It may be hard to swallow but here it is...what you want and the idea of humility don’t go together. "Matthew 18: In his prime, Muhammad Ali would shout, "I am the greatest." In private, he might have been a very different person. Ali once said, "At home I am a nice guy: but I don’t want the world to know. Humble people, I’ve found, don’t get very far." Muhammad Ali (b. 1942), U.S. boxer.
