BIOGRAPHY The Victorian English poet Matthew Arnold was born at Laleham on the Thames, Middlesex. He received his education at Winchester, Rugby, and Balliol College, Oxford. Early on, Arnold showed promise as a poet winning prizes for his poem "Alaric at Rome" at Rugby and the Newdigate Prize at Oxford for "Cromwell, A Prize Poem." Before becoming private secretary to Lord Lanscowne in 1847, Arnold traveled in France where he met the novelist George Sand. In 1851 Arnold was appointed inspector of schools, which became a lifelong vocation and enabled him to marry Frances Lucy Wightman. Arnold's literary career began in 1849 with his first volume of verse

Matthew Arnold, Culture is "High Culture"
From Culture and Anarchy Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) was a preeminent poet of the Victorian era, a lifelong educator, a pioneer in the field of literary criticism, a government official (Inspector of Schools), and an influential public figure. But one of his most enduring legacies is his extensive body of writing on the topic of culture. Arnold saw culture"contact with the best which has been thought and said in the world" (cf. "high culture" in the glossary) as the crucial component of a healthy democratic state. Arnold's view of culture as involving such characteristics as "beauty," "intelligence," and "perfection" is a Neoplatonic one that is, it tends to assume that these values exist in the abstract and are the same for all human societies. His argument, then, is openly political: he feels that if more people will share and pursue his notions of beauty, truth, and perfectionof culturethat the world will be a better place. Compare this view with that of Raymond Williams who argues that culture isn't just the "best that has been thought and said," but rather that "culture is ordinary" and with the anthropological perspectives of

    Matthew Arnold
Matthew Arnold is buried in the family plot in All Saints' Churchyard, Laleham, Middlesex. Arnold was the son of Thomas Arnold, a Headmaster of Rugby School, who is also buried in the churchyard. In 1851 Arnold became an inspector of schools - a career to which he dedicated 35 years of his life. In 1858 Arnold became Professor of Poetry at Oxford University which was rather ironic as, with the exception of one further poetry collection, he wrote prose for the rest of his life.

In his later years he was renowned as the greatest literary critic of his day - influencing the likes of T.S Eliot Arnold died in Liverpool in 1888 whilst awaiting the arrival of his daughter from America. He was running for a tram car in the city when he suffered a heart attack. Arnold is commemorated with a bust in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey.

    Matthew Arnold
Although remembered now for his elegantly argued critical essays, Matthew Arnold began his career as a poet, winning early recognition as a student at the Rugby School where his father, Thomas Arnold, had earned national acclaim as a strict and innovative headmaster. Arnold also studied at Balliol College, Oxford University. In 1844, after completing his undergraduate degree at Oxford, he returned to Rugby as a teacher of classics.
After marrying in 1851, Arnold began work as a government school inspector, a grueling position which nonetheless afforded him the opportunity to travel throughout England and the Continent. Throughout his thirty-five years in this position Arnold developed an interest in education, an interest which fed into both his critical works and his poetry. Empedocles on Etna (1852) and Poems (1853) established Arnold's reputation as a poet and in 1857 he was offered a position, which he accepted and held until 1867, as Professor of Poetry at Oxford. Arnold became the first professor to lecture in English rather than Latin.
During this time Arnold wrote the bulk of his most famous critical works, Essays in Criticism (1865) and Culture and Anarchy (1869), in which he sets forth ideas that greatly reflect the predominant values of the Victorian era.

    Matthew Arnold
Matthew Arnold was born at Laleham in Middlesex, the son of Dr. Thomas Arnold, the celebrated headmaster of Rugby School. He was educated at Winchester, Rugby and Balliol College, Oxford. Throughout his career as an inspector of schools, during which he simultaneously held the post of professor of poetry at Oxford for ten years, he strove to improve educational standards in Victorian England by the study of Continental systems and by the application of sound, religiously-based principles. His poetry was written in the early part of his career, between 1849 and 1867, and is classical and somewhat lugubrious in style. His most famous works include Dover Beach Tristam and Iseult Sohrab and Rustum Thyrsis , an elegy on the death of his friend, Arthur Clough, and The Scholar-Gipsy Dover Beach
