Matthew Arnold was a major Victorian poet, the principal English literary critic of his generation, an important commentator on society and culture, and an effective government official. His father was Thomas Arnold, the headmaster of Rugby School. After graduation from Oxford, Matthew Arnold went to London as a private secretary to a member of the government. In 1851 he was appointed an inspector of schools. For 35 years he visited teacher-training schools to assure that they met government standards. He also visited schools on the continent, writing several reports in which he urged the benefits of state support and centralized supervision of education. Arnold began his literary career in 1849 with a volume of poems

Others abide our question. Thou art free.
We ask and ask: Thou smilest and art still,
Out-topping knowledge. For the loftiest hill
That to the stars uncrowns his majesty,
Planting his stedfast footsteps in the sea,
Making the Heaven of Heavens his dwelling-place,
Spares but the cloudy border of his base
To the foil'd searching of mortality:
And thou, who didst the stars and sunbeams know,
    Self-school'd, self-scann'd, self-honour'd, self-secure,
Didst walk on Earth unguess'd at. Better so!
All pains the immortal spirit must endure,
All weakness that impairs, all griefs that bow,
Find their sole voice in that victorious brow.
    West London
Crouch'd on the pavement close by Belgrave Square
    A tramp I saw, ill, moody, and tongue-tied;
A babe was in her arms, and at her side
A girl; their clothes were rags, their feet were bare.
Some labouring men, whose work lay somewhere there,
Pass'd opposite; she touch'd her girl, who hied
Across, and begg'd and came back satisfied.

Resolve to be thyself: and know, that he
Who finds himself, loses his misery. For the creation of a master-work of literature two powers must concur, the power of the man and the power of the moment. Genius is mainly an affair of energy, and poetry is mainly an affair of genius; therefore a nation whose spirit is characterized by energy may well be imminent in poetry - and we have Shakespeare. One thing only has been lent to youth and age in common discontent.

M atthew Arnold was born in 1822, the same year that Percy Shelley drowned. He was born at Laleham on Christmas Eve. He was the son of Dr. Thomas Arnold, the revered headmaster of Rugby; and he earned early recognition for his poetry as a student at that school. Arnold also studied at Balliol College, Oxford University under a classical scholarship. Instead of applying himself to any one subject, he read widely. He also read a great deal of Roman and Greek literature. He became a close friend of Arthur Hugh Clough. In 1844, he completed his undergraduate degree and returned to Rugby as a teacher of classics for a time. In 1847, he became the private secretary to Lord Lansdowne, an active politician.

    Memorial Verses April 1850
Goethe in Weimar sleeps, and Greece, Long since, saw Byron's struggle cease. But one such death remain'd to come; The last poetic voice is dumb We stand to-day by Wordsworth's tomb.
When Byron's eyes were shut in death, We bow'd our head and held our breath. He taught us little; but our soul Had felt him like the thunder's roll. With shivering heart the strife we saw Of passion with eternal law; And yet with reverential awe We watch'd the fount of fiery life Which served for that Titanic strife.
When Goethe's death was told, we said: Sunk, then, is Europe's sagest head. Physician of the iron age, Goethe has done his pilgrimage. He took the suffering human race, He read each wound, each weakness clear; And struck his finger on the place, And said: Thou ailest here, and here!
He look'd on Europe's dying hour Of fitful dream and feverish power; His eye plunged down the weltering strife, The turmoil of expiring life He said: The end is everywhere

    Matthew Arnold (1822-1888)
Matthew Arnold was a major nineteenth-century British poet and literary critic, whose poems include "The Scholar-Gypsy," "Rugby Chapel" and "Dover Beach." Arnold was educated at Rugby School, where his father was Headmaster, and at Oxford University. The poet William Wordsworth was a family friend. Although Matthew Arnold was greatly respected as a poet, a literary critic, and a writer on social, political and religious issues, he never earned his living by writing. To support himself and his family, he spent most of his working life as a government school inspector. He was also a professor of poetry at Oxford from 1857 to 1867.
