Aristotle (384-322 B.C.) Aristotle lived from 384-322 B.C., and is universally considered as one of the great thinkers of the ancient world. He was born in the city of Stagira, in Macedonia. His father, Nichomacus, was the personal physician to the King of Macedonia, Amyntas; later, Aristotle would be tutor for a number of years to Amyntas' grandson: Alexander (later known as Alexander the Great). In 367, at the age of 17, Aristotle left Stagira to attend school in Athens; he attended the Academy founded by Plato . The Academy had been set up by Plato as a continuing educational experience, the principles of which were later set out in Plato's major work, the Republic . Aristotle continued at the Academy until the death of Plato in 347, some twenty years. Aristotle was recognized as a brilliant if independent student of philosophy and hoped to succeed Plato as head of the Academy. When Speusippus, a nephew of Plato, was chosen instead, Aristotle left Athens. From 347 until 343, Aristotle travelled in the Greek islands and in Asia Minor and lived on the island of Lesbos from 345 to 343. In 343 Aristotle accepted the invitation of Phillip, King of Macadenia (and son of Nichomacus who had previously employed Aristotle's father) to tutor his son Alexander. Though the two are reported to have been friends, Aristotle and Alexander had rather different ambitions: that of Aristotle was to establish a new school and a philosophical world view for the Greek world, that of Alexander was to conquer an empire.

Aristotle (384-322 bc)
Al men by nature desire to know. Character must be true to life; for this is a distinct thing from goodness and propriety. Equality consists in the same treatment of similar persons, and no government can stand which is not founded on justice. Every art and every inquiry, and similarly every action and pursuit, is thought to aim at some good; and for this reason the good has rightly been declared to be that at which all things aim. For one swallow does not make a summer, nor does one day; and so too one day, or a short time, does not make a man blessed or happy. He is by nature a slave who is capable of belonging to another. I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies; for the hardest victory is over self. If liberty and equality, as is thought by some, are chiefly to be found in democracy, they will be best attained when all persons alike share in the government to the utmost.

Aristotle (384-322 BC)
Born in northern Greece (his father was a doctor who's patents included the king of Masadonia), at the age of 17 Aristotle went to Athens to study under Plato, and remained at the academy for nearly 20 years, until Plato's death in 348 or 347 BCE. Aristotle then left Athens for a while until he was invited to return to Masadonia by Philip to tutor Alexander (the Great). Aristotle founded his own philosophical school (remains of this school where found in 1996). He worked there until Alexander's death in 323 BCE when the Athenians, in a strongly anti Masadonian mood brought a formal charge of impiety against him (as with Socrates). Aristotle escaped to Chalcis but died there the following year aged 62. He married twice and had a son, Nicomachus by his second wife. His philosophical interests covered an extremely wide area. He composed major studies of logic, ethics, and metaphysics, but also wrote on epistemology, physics, mathematics, biology, meteorology, dynamics, psychology, rhetoric, dialectics, aesthetics, and politics. Aristotle's philosophical development is difficult to determine chronologically. Many of his works read like notebooks or possibly lecture notes. His writing reflect the activity of thinking itself uncluttered by rhetoric or stylistic affection. Let us look at just two of his interests, ethics and what he has to say about Plato's "Ideal Forms".

Aristotle Quotes
Anyone can become angry - that is easy, but to be angry with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way - that is not easy. Democracy, for example, arises out of the notion that those who are equal in any respect are equal in all respects; because men are equally free, they claim to be absolutely equal. Wicked men obey from fear; good men, from love. There was never a genius without a tincture of madness. A friend is another I. Without friends, no one would choose to live, though they had all other goods. What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies. A true friend is one soul in two bodies. Misfortune shows those who are not really friends. We can do noble acts without ruling the earth and sea. It will contribute towards one's object, who wishes to acquire a facility in the gaining of knowledge, to doubt judiciously. The high-minded man must care more for the truth than for what people think. Hope is a waking dream.

ARISTOTLE (384-322 B.C.) Aristotle was born in 384 B.C. at Stagyra , a Greek colony and seaport on the coast of Thrace. His father Nichomachus was court physician to King Amyntas of Macedonia, and from this began Aristotle's long association with the Macedonian Court , which considerably influenced his life. While he was still a boy his father died. At age his guardian, Proxenus , sent him to Athens , the intellectual center of the world, to complete his education. He joined the Academy and studied under Plato , attending his lectures for a period of twenty years . In the later years of his association with Plato and the Academy he began to lecture on his own account, especially on the subject of rhetoric . At the death of Plato in , the pre-eminent ability of Aristotle would seem to have designated him to succeed to the leadership of the Academy. But his divergence from Plato's teaching was too great to make this possible, and Plato's nephew Speusippus was chosen instead. At the invitation of his friend Hermeas , ruler of Atarneus and Assos in Mysia, Aristotle left for his court. He stayed three year and, while there, married

    The Educational Theory of Aristotle
Analyst: Elizabeth Mays RETURN edited 2/26/01
    I. Theory of Value What knowledge and skills are worthwhile learning? The purpose of the state is to educate the people to make them virtuous. Virtue is the life principle of the state. The goal of the state is to educate with a view toward its own institutions (to preserve them) - political education of all citizens (179, Davidson). [Virtue is the perfection of reason. Reason is the source of the first principles of knowledge. Reason deals with the abstract and ideal aspects. Active reason makes the world intelligible ("Aristotle" 384-322 BC). What are the goals of education? Education is a function of the State, and is conducted, primarily at least, for the ends of the State. State - highest social institution which secures the highest goal or happiness of man. Education is preparation for some worthy activity (169, Davidson). Education should be guided by legislation to make it correspond with the results of psychological analysis, and follow the gradual development of the bodily and mental faculties ("Aristotle" 384-322 BC). Specifically, technical Skills - play, physical activity, moral and physical education - gymnastic training or physical ed; music; Liberal ed. - reading and writing; ages 15 to 21 -mathematics, geometry, astronomy, grammar, literature, poetry, rhetoric, ethics, and politics; age 21 - theoretical subjects - physics, cosmology, biology, psychology, logic, and metaphysics (112, Ornstein)

Aristotle (Aristotelis in Greek) 384-322 BC
His Life Aristotle was born in Stagira, on the peninsula of Chalkidiki in Macedonia, Greece (hence his nickname "the Stagirite"). His father was Nichomachus, court physician to Amyntas III of Macedonia (the father of Philip II of Macedon and grandfather of Alexander the Great), and he was no doubt introduced to Greek medicine and biology at an early age. In 367 BC, after his father's death he was sent to Athens, and became first a pupil then a teacher at Plato's Academy. He remained there for 20 years, until Plato's death in 347 BC, and gained a particular reputatoin in rhetoric. Plato Alexander the Great . He was his tutor for three years. After a brief spell on his father's property at Stagira, Aristotle returned to Athens in 335 BC to found his own school, the Lyceum (near the temple of Apollo Lyceius), where he taught for the next 12 years. His followers became known as peripatetics, supposedly from his practice of walking up and down the peripatos (covered walkway) of the gymnasium during his lectures. He made the Lyceum into a major research center, specializing in history, biology, and zoology, thus complementing the mathematical emphasis of the Platonists at the Academy. Alexander the Great died in 323 BC, and there was a strong anti-Macedonian reaction in Athens. Aristotle, of course, had long-standing Macedonian connections, and took refuge in Chalcis in Euboea, reportedly saying that he was saving the Athenians from sinning twice against philosophy (
