Link to Family Name Click Here John Arbuthnot studied at Marischal College, Aberdeen, then took a medical degree at the University of St Andrews graduating in 1696. He translated Huygens' tract on probability in 1692 and extended it by adding to it a few further games of chance. This was the first work on probability published in English.
    Graduated with a medical degree.
Arbuthnot went to London and gave lessons in mathematics. Around this time (1700) he published: Essay towards a natural history of the Earth and Essay on the usefulness of mathematical learning.
He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1704. In 1705 he was appointed physician to Queen Anne. He continued his scientific work submitting a paper to the Royal Society in 1710 discussing the slight excess of male births over female births. This paper is perhaps the first application of probability to social statistics. In this paper he claims to demonstrate that divine providence, not chance, governs the sex ratio at birth. Arbuthnot's main fame is on his reputation as a wit and on his satirical writings. With Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift, John Gay and Thomas Parnell he founded the Scriblerus Club in 1714, whose purpose was to satirise bad poetry and pedantry. The club was short-lived.

    Fisher, John Arbuthnot "Jackie"
Admiral and Naval Reformer Jackie Fisher, first Baron Fisher of Kilverstone, was born in Ceylon, the son of an English planter. He joined the navy in 1854, was made captain in 1874, and reached flag rank in 1890. Fisher served as commander of the Royal Navy's gunnery school (1883-1886), director of naval ordnance (DNO) (1886-1891), superintendent of the Portsmouth Dockyard (1891-1892), third sea lord and controller (1892-1897), commander of the North America and West Indies station (1897), commander of the Mediterranean Fleet (1897-1901), second sea lord (1902-1903), commander of the Portsmouth Dockyard (1903-1904), first sea lord (1904-1910 and 1914-1915), and chairman of the Board of Invention and Research (1915-1918). While at the gunnery school and as DNO, Fisher was involved with the development of breech-loading big-guns, quick-firing guns, and naval range finders. As third sea lord and controller, he invented the destroyer and encouraged the introduction of water-tube boilers. As second sea lord, he reformed naval education. As first sea lord, Fisher changed the management of the dockyards, the manning system, gunnery training, the warship reserve, and the distribution of the fleet. These initiatives concentrated the main strength of the Royal Navy in home waters, increased the navy's ability to mobilize its full strength rapidly and fight more effectively in case of a short war, and produced large reductions in naval spending.

    http://www.thisisjersey.com/art/heritage/malcolmarbuthnot.html
Malcolm Arbuthnot (1877-1967) Malcolm Arbuthnot made small beautiful things from observed objects. Almost all of his beginnings (sketches) were of things found anywhere.
I often saw him working in his studio making minor adjustments to a line or shape; searching for the form that linked the elements of his drawing; adjusting emphases or colours, simplifying to an inevitable end. The painting which then followed had been planned out of every unrelated space, shape, surface and colour; relationships of hard and soft edges had been calculated.
I cannot recall any purely invented work nor any emotional response to his subjects, just a fixed determination to find an answer to the problems of making a work of integrity. Now and again the answers, however considered, did not work. He knew it but kept the pieces (perhaps inspiration would come) for reference: perhaps he should have destroyed some of this cache before he died.
He was a very large man and big with it. He could be overbearing in the sureness of his own beliefs. The delicacy of his work in the hands of so large a body sometimes seemed unlikely. However to me he was most generous with helpful criticism of my own work. I learned a great deal from him.
    - a personal appreciation written by Fred Sands RI. Originally published by the Jersey Heritage Trust in their Jersey Artists series.

    John Le Capelain (1812-1848)
The effect of scenery is so much influenced by the atmosphere, that a short description of its effects on that Island ought not to be omitted in theis work.
Surrounded by the sea, Jersey is almost every night shrouded in a mist which the rising sun in dissolving tinges with prismatic colours.
From the eastern coast is best seen the splendour of the sunrise - the cold, white light dawn silently creeping up the dark and starry sky, extinguishing their pale fires amid its rosy and increasing light - blinds of golden brightness fret the clouds; the sune is near - is up; a stream of light dances over the pale blue sea and sparkles on the wet and pebbly beach: as the mists disappear each object becomes more defined, and everything shines in dewy freshness.
As the day advances, the sea - the true mirror of the sky - reflects its deeper blue; left bare by the receeding tide, large tracts of sand and rocks of varied hue have quite changed the aspect of the scene; from the sun's warm rays the green, cool valleys offer delightful retreats, - narrow winding and well wooded, they abound in scenes of perfect sylvan beauty. Branching in every direction, shady lanes, lined by graceful elms, lead to every part of the island.
Along the western coast the glowing colours of the setting sun are reflected from each rocky headland and sandy bay, blending their rich hues with the pearly tints of the rising moon. During the equinoctial gales, the storm-swept sea shivers its wild waves into glittering fragments along the rocky coast, whilst dark grey clouds cast their driving shadows over sea and land. In the Drawings these various effects of sunrise, noon, sunset, twilight, moonlight, and storm, are given.
