He continued his scientific work submitting a paper to the Royal Society in 1710 discussing the slight excess of male births over female births. This paper is perhaps the first application of probability to social statistics. In this paper he claims to demonstrate that divine providence, not chance, governs the sex ratio at birth. Political Lying an essay by John Arbuthnot (16671735) physicianto Queen Anne and member of the Scriblerus Club. POLITICAL LYING

POLITICAL LYING
by John Arbuthnot
from Proposals for printing...a Treatise of the Art of Political Lying... ....CONCERNING the he gives several Rules; one of which is, that terrible Objects should not be too frequently shewn to the People, lest they grow familiar. He says, it is absolutely necessary that the People of England should be frighted with the French King and the Pretender once a Year, but, that the Bears should be chained up again till that time Twelve-month. The want of Observing this so necessary a Precept, in bringing out the Raw-head and Bloody-bones upon every trifling Occasion, has produced great Indifference in the Vulgar of late Years. As to the Animating or Encouraging Lies, he gives the following Rules; That they should not far exceed the common degrees of Probability, and that there should be variety of them, and the same Lie not obstinately insisted upon; that the Promissory or Prognosticating Lies should not be upon short Days, for fear the Authors should have the Shame and Confusion to see themselves speedily contradicted. He examines by these Rules, that well-meant, but unfortunate Lie of the Conquest of France , which continued near twenty Years together; but at last, by being too obstinately insisted upon, it was worn threadbare, and became unsuccessful.

At the death of the Queen, when it pleased the new government to change all the attendants of the court, the immortal suffered with the mortal. Arbuthnot, displaced from his apartments at St James’s, took a house in Dover-street remarking philosophically to Swift, that he "hoped still to be able to keep a little habitation warm in town." His circumstances were never so prosperous or agreeable after this period. With the world at large success makes merit—and the want of it the reverse—and it is perhaps impossible for human nature to think so highly of a man who has been improperly deprived of some external mark of distinction and honour, as of him who wears it without so much desert. The wit, left to his own resources and with a rising family to support, seems to have now lived in some little embarrassment.

For details of his genealogy click here . For details of his career click here. There are portraits described as being of Dr John Arbuthnot which seems more probably to be of William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield (1705-93). In setting out the facts on this site, it may be better to present the portraits in order (1 - 9) Dr John Arbuthnot, (10) the portrait in question and (11 - 16) the Earl of Mansfield. Uncontroversial representations of Dr John Arbuthnot include: 1. William Robinson's portrait which is in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. This is reproduced in Beattie's " John Arbuthnot ". This William Robinson is not the Robinson (1799-1839) who was a pupil of Sir Thomas Lawrence. 2. The portrait which was then in the possession of Mr William Arbuthnot-Leslie of Warthill, Aberdeenshire, also shown in Mrs P.S.-M.Arbuthnot's " Memories of the Arbuthnots of Kincardineshire and Aberdeenshire Sir William Arbuthnot, Bt
