Lucius Apuleius ca 123/5 CE - ca 180 CE), an utterly Romanized Berber, is remembered most for his bawdy picaresque Latin novel the Metamorphoses , better known as The Golden Ass He was born in Madaurus, a Roman colony in Numidia on the border with Gaetulia, now the Algerian town of Mdaourouch, Algeria, a district well away from the Romanized coast, but where some pristine Roman ruins remain. The same colonia was where Saint Augustine later received part of his early education. His father was a provincial magistrate and he inherited a substantial fortune from him. Apuleius studied with a master at Carthage and later at Athens , where he studied Platonic philosophy among other subjects. After being initiated as a worshipper of Isis , he went to Rome to study Latin oratory. Later he travelled extensively in Asia Minor and Egypt , studying philosophy and religion After being accused of using magic to gain the attentions (and fortune) of a widow, he declaimed and then distributed a witty tour de force in his own defense before the proconsul and a court of magistrates convened in Sabratha, near Tripoli, the Apologia (A Discourse on Magic) . His other works include On the God of Socrates

The Golden Ass of Apuleius
The Golden Ass,written by Apuleius in the second century A.D.,is a rewarding read for anyone embarking on the exploration of Consciousness. It is very simply the story of a young man who is punished for his ignorant behaviour by being metamorphosed into an ass.Paradoxically it is while he is an ass that he begins to understand the nature of Consciousness. Lucius, the "hero" of this story, sets out on a journey to acquire power by learning the secrets of magic. In tantric terminology he is trying to tap into feminine energies via the left-hand path.

Lucius Apuleius
a.k.a. Africanus * Author Code: CLAA Born: c. 123 AD - Madauros, Africa Died: c. 170 AD - Carthage (?), Africa Also called Apuleius of Madaura. His most famous work Metamorphoses , but more commonly called The Golden Ass , is thought to contain many autobiographical anecdotes in spite of the fact that it is obviously a work of fiction. Probably the most famous part of this work is the section entitled Cupid and Psyche , which has been greatly imitated by later authors. Both Boccaccio and Cervantes have taken some of Apuleius' adventures and incorporated them into their own works.

Sullivan, The Satyricon of Petronius and P.G. Walsh, The Roman Novel come to mind in secondary literature in English- that have carefully skirted the generic issue. Nancy Shumate tackles the problem head-on and, suggesting a new interpretation of the Metamorphoses , she inserts this novel squarely within in the narrative of religious conversion. We certainly welcome the author's theoretical narratological approach to the novel, based mostly on J.J. Winkler's Auctor and actor: A Narratological Reading of Apuleius's The Golden Ass (Berkeley 1985), although we would have liked to see a more comprehensive discussion of the matter. Some reference to major narratologists, such as Bakhtin, Todorov, Genette, Ricoeur would not only have made the study more ecumenical, but also would have clarified some points on which the author is uncertain.
