Victor Appleton
Victor Appleton was the pseudonym used by Howard R. Garis for thirty-five of the stories and novels featuring the character of Tom Swift. Garis was born on April 25th, 1873 in Binghamton, New York. He was a newspaper reporter for the Evening News . Garis married Lilian C. Garis on April 26th, 1900. Lilian was a prolific writer of fiction for the Stratemeyer Syndicate (which was responsible for nearly 1,600 series books), for which Garis also wrote. Garis wrote numerous books as a ghostwriter: as Victor Appleton, Laura Lee Hope, Lester Chadwick, Roy Rockwood, and Clarence Young. He reserved his own name for writing the children's series of Uncle Wiggily Longears stories, which featured an elderly, gentleman rabbit. The books are still read today. Garis died in Amherst, Massachusetts on November 6th, 1962.

Stratemeyer commissioned a young author, Howard Garis, to ghost write the Tom Swift tales from his own outlines beginning in 1910. This assignment would grow into a close friendship and partnership over the years and expand into other series. Don Sturdy Don Sturdy, the nephew of the famous big game hunter, Captain Frank Sturdy, travels the far corners of the Earth in search of adventure. In the first three adventures, Don and his uncle search the globe to find his missing parents and sister.
Moving Picture Boys
Joe Duncan and Blake Stewart two young lads working as farm hands had met Mr. Calvert Hadley a film producer and joined his moving picture group the Film Theatrical Company. With their curious box-like cameras equipped with thousands of feet of sensitive celluloid film, they had risen from the ranks of assistants to operators to moving picture experts and traveled from New York City throughout the countryside on various adventures.

Where is Tom Swift,
Now that We Need Him?
Essay by
Ron Grube September 2001
I was totally amazed when a group of parents and teenagers came to a city council meeting in my small Nevada town, complaining that the city government was not providing enough facilities to keep "the kids" occupied. In the ensuing discussion, it appeared that most of these people thought it was local government, rather than the parents and teens themselves, that was responsible for the boredom and general aimlessness of our younger citizens. The city has two excellent city parks, with night-lit ball fields, tennis and basketball courts, horseshoe pits, and a fishing pond with surrounding nature trails for daytime use. There is a very sparsely used branch of the county public library. Seems that this is insufficient, and the city should provide such things as video arcades and teen dance halls, items I always assumed were best left to private enterprise. Questions were asked about hobbies, reading, Scouting (somewhat alive, mostly in the youngest groups), and community activities. It seems that anything requiring more than a minimal amount of thought or effort, especially activities that would actually lead to learning useful skills, has been relegated to the level of political incorrectness. Speaking with the parents led to the conclusion that they, too, had no real interests or activities other than work, TV, and maybe the local saloon. Few of them read the local newspaper, much less books. Hobbies such as ham radio, model aircraft, even working on cars or playing board games that required thinking were unheard of. Parents amuse themselves playing video slot machines, youth play video games and drive around town playing rap music at volume levels that bulge car windows and has to be mind-numbing to all in the vehicle.

Victor Appleton
Victor Appleton was a pseudonym that belonged to the Stratemeyer Syndicate. This group of writers were responsible for the majority of children's literature published in the first half of the 20th century. Most, if not all, of the first 36 Tom Swift books were actually written by Syndicate author Howard R. Garis (1873-1962), who also wrote other children's series under other pseudonyms. For more information on the Stratemeyer Syndicate, see Edward Stratemeyer Works Author Information Updated December 12, 2003
