In 1912 Sherwood Anderson suffered a breakdown and abandoned his successful business, marriage, and three children to become a writer. His best known work was inspired by the small-town of Clyde, Ohio where he spent most of his youth. He encouraged the younger writers William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway, whose reputations have since surpassed his own. He re-married twice Radical socialist. After The Dial, he was a contributing editor to The New Masses (1926-48) along with cartoonist and Dial contributor Boardman Robinson . Then a popular author, a good deal of his work appeared first in The Dial during the 1920s. This may have mollified this initial rather contemptuous judgement of Thayer in 1919 in a letter to Waldo Frank:
"You will be amused when you get the full story of Thayer & The Dial. Poor man, he intended to be such a nice, rich man, a true English gentleman, bringing culture to America. It was vicious to step on his toes ... for my stories I shall get $200, or they will be sent free to someone else... All Thayer has is money, & if he does not surrender the money, he is N.G. to anyone."
    Left Bank Review

The work serialised in issues of the Dial in 1922-3 was Many Marriages

Welcome to the History of Trout Dale
Because Henando de Soto recorded in 1540 that the Xualans inhabited southwestern Virginia Southeastern Virginia, this is the earliest tribe in the area of which historians have written accounts. The historian James Stamper of Independence wrote in 1930's that [The Xualans were] a race of hardy Indians who derived a livelihood off the game abounding in the mountains. These Indians were...a hospitable race but poor, fond of manly exercises and war. During the winter these Indians lived in log houses daubed with clay, but in summer they lived almost entirely in the open air. they constructed towns which were both a town and a fort. This additional characteristic of their towns distinguished these Indians from all the other southern tribes. Remains of these forts are still to be found in various places in southwestern Virginia and offer a splendid opportunity for a study of their lives and history. Apparently, the Cherokee Tribe later invaded the area and took over, being a powerful nation during the beginning of the European settlement. The U.S. government later moved them south into the mountains of North Carolina, where they have established a museum. Look at this
