Hans Christian Andersen was born in Odense. Before becoming a novelist and playwright, Andersen trained as an actor. His fairy tales began to appear in 1835, and soon they were translated into many languages. He achieved a reputation around the world for these stories, which combined originality and tradition, morality and sublimity.

Danish writer who combined folk legends, moral teachings and humor with his own great imagination and produced fairy tales, which were not meant merely for children but for adults as well. Andersen used frequently colloquial style that disguises the sophistication of his tales. Before achieving success as a playwright and novelist, Andersen was trained as singer and actor. Many of Andersen's fairy tales depict characters who gain happiness in life after suffering and conflicts. 'The Ugly Duckling' is Andersen's most confessional work.

The Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen is best known for his greatly loved children’s stories such as The Little Mermaid The Princess and the Pea and The Tin Soldier . He also wrote plays, novels and poems, and kept diaries throughout his life. The diaries present an alternative impression to the public face of the author by showing us his privately nervous and sensitive nature. Entries are dated from his early twenties until the day he died, and they range in sentiment from harmonious and optimistic to overly pessimistic. For instance, his thoughts jump from carefully recorded impressions of the places and people he had met, to pedantic notations of any criticism levelled at his writing.
