Below is the complete list of Andersen’s 168 tales, in the chronological order of their original publication. Title variations and Danish equivalents may be found in the cross reference Andersen’s tale “ Danish Popular Legends ” was first published in The Riverside Magazine for Young People , Vol. IV, pp. 470-474, New York, October 1870. It has never been published in Denmark. The hypertext is based on an etext found in the Andersen Homepage of the Danish National Literary Archive. It may be somewhat surprising to learn that a number of Andersen’s tales were published in America even before being published in Andersen’s native Denmark. According to Jean Hersholt’s introduction to The Andersen-Scudder Letters , University of California Press, 1949, ten tales were published by Horace Elisha Scudder, Andersen’s American editor, publisher and translator, in the above mentioned Magazine , in the years 1868-1870. Danish Writer, Poet and Playwright Prolific Danish writer H.C. Andersen has inspired generations of young and adults with his popular fairy tales. A classic children's author in world literature, Andersen wrote more than one hundred and fifty fairy tales and his stories have been translated into over 100 languages
    A troubled chilhood in Odense

Hans Christian Andersen's childhood was not a happy one and his troubled life in the the slums of the city of Odense would influence forever his personality and his writing. Born in a very poor family, his father was a shoemaker, her mother a washerwoman and her half-sister had to work as a prostitute. Andersen himself was often teased and humiliated by other boys because of his effeminate manners and his physical look: he had a big nose and was disproportionately tall. Despite their poor situation, his parents encouraged him to cultivate his artistic interests. His father would take Andersen to the playhouse and her mother would tell him colourful old Danish folktales and superstitions. His humble social background, his troubled chilhood and both the literary support of his father and the Danish popular folklore received from the mother would shape the writing of Andersen.

    Hans Christian Andersen
Hans Christian Andersen was born in Denmark on the 2nd of April 1805, into a poor family. Andersen very early showed signs of imaginative temperament, which was fostered by the indulgence and superstition of his parents. In 1816 his father died and he was left entirely to his own devices. Wishing to be an opera-singer, Andersen took matters into his own hands and started for Copenhagen in September 1819. There he was taken for a lunatic, snubbed at the theatres, and nearly reduced to starvation, but he was befriended by the musicians Christoph Weyse and Siboni, and afterwards by the poet Frederik Hoegh Guldberg (1771-1852). His voice failed, but he was admitted as a dancing student at the Royal Theatre. He grew idle, and lost the favor of Guldberg, but a new patron appeared in the person of Jonas Collin, the director of the Royal Theatre, who became Andersen's life-long friend. King Frederick VI was interested in the strange boy and sent him, free of charge, to the great grammar-school at Slagelse. Before he started for school he published his first volume, The Ghost at Palnatoke's Grave (1822). Andersen, a very backward and unwilling student, actually remained at Slagelse and at another school in Elsinore until 1827; these years, he says, were the darkest and bitterest in his life. Collin at length consented to consider him educated, and Andersen came to Copenhagen. In 1829 he made a considerable success with a fantastic volume entitled
