To avoid the obstacle of the ice pack, a Swedish engineer named Salomon Andrée attempted to use an unpowered helium-filled silk balloon to reach the Pole from Spitsbergen in 1896 and 1897. Unfavorable winds cancelled the attempt in 1896, but the following year Andrée, along with Nils Strindberg and Knut Frankel, managed to take off. Three days later, fog and icing caused the balloon to founder about 350 miles from Danes Island. The three men managed to reach White Island, but it was not until over thirty years later that their remains were discovered.
An Italian nobleman, Luigi Amedeo di Savoia, Duke of the Abruzzi, led another attempt from the northeasternmost extremity of Franz Josef Land, Rudolf Island in 1899. Luigi's fingers were so badly frostbitten during winter that he was unable to make a run at the Pole the following spring. Instead, Umberto Cagni took a sledge party 20 miles further north than Nansen's record, but three men perished on the return.

Having conquered the Northwest Passage and the South Pole, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen set his sights on the North Pole. He chose to adopt Fridtjof Nansen's idea of freezing a ship into the ice and floating to the Pole. However, the Fram was no longer seaworthy, so a new wooden vessel, the Maud , was constructed with an egg-shaped bottom to lift under ice pressure and avoid being crushed, similar to the Fram. Despite the start of World War I, the Maud departed Christiania (Oslo), Norway in July 1918, and set off through the Northeast Passage, along the coast of Siberia, with the intention of being frozen into the pack ice north of the Bering Strait. However, the pack ice formed much earlier that year, and by September the

[RETURN TO UAA ARCHIVES HOME PAGE] [COLLECTION LIST] ROALD AMUNDSEN, 1872-1928. Papers, 1905-1926. 1 reel, microfilm. Guide. Roald Amundsen was born in Borge, Norway in 1872. He began an education in medicine, but left to go to sea. Amundsen became identified with Polar explorations. In 1897, he served on the Belgica on the Belgian Antarctic Expedition. Between 1903 and 1906 he traversed the Northwest Passage on the Gjoa . In December, 1911, he reached the South Pole a month before R. F. Scott. He traversed the Northeast Passage in the Maud between 1918 and 1920. Later he flew from Spitzbergen with L. Ellsworth in an attempt to reach the North Pole. The effort failed when they were forced to land on pack ice. He flew over the North Pole in the air ship Norge with Umberto Nobile in 1926. Two years later he died while participating in a search for Nobile after the wreck of the airship Italia This collection consists of a reel of microfilm containing copies of documents, correspondence, articles and photographs from Alaskan and other libraries concerning Amundsen's activities in Alaska. The papers primarily concern the period between 1903 and 1906, and the period from 1918 to 1928. Most of the correspondence is between Amundsen and Carl Loman, a resident of Nome. There are several of Carl Loman's diaries, as well as photographs of Amundsen, Loman and his family, Nobile, and of various vessels and airships. Approximately half the collection is composed of printed materials such as newspaper clippings and articles. These materials were compiled by the Alaska Historical Library, Juneau, Alaska. A finding aid was compiled by Stephen Jackson.

Josiane Ferraro Maurice Ferraro Florence Ferraro Alain Ferraro Andrée Renard Monique Blaise Bernadette Steinmetz Charles Steinmetz AMUNDSEN ROALD (1872-1928) Explorateur norvégien.

Roald Amundsen (1872-1928), Fram , led the first successful expedition to reach the South Pole, arriving Dec. 14, 1911, just ahead of Britain's ill-fated Robert Scott.
Later, Amundsen was cheated from another North Pole first, when American Admiral Richard Byrd claimed to have flown a plane over the North Pole with Floyd Bennett. Subsequent first-person historical evidence now suggests that Byrd never quite made it, and that Amundsen, who crossed the pole in a rigid airship a short time later in 1926 actually was first.
Amundsen disappeared while flying a rescue mission to save a fellow explorer in the Arctic in 1928.

(The coldest webpage you will ever see!!!) Roald Amundsen
Roald Amundsen, born in 1872 near Oslo, Norway, left his mark on the Heroic Era as one of the most successful polar explorers ever born. His career of adventure began at the age of 15, originally studying medicine, but dropping out to go to sea where he soon moved his way up to the rank of mate. His first experience in the Antarctic was with Adrien de Gerlache's Belgica Expedition . He became the first to travel the Northwest Passage , in his ship Gjoa in 1903-06. After this expedition, plans were assembled to drift across the North Pole in Nansen's famous Fram , but news arrived of Peary's successful attainment of the pole which caused Amundsen to make new plans - covert plans - for an expedition to the Antarctic and the subsequent capture of the South Pole.

The Roald Amundsen Monument - Or The Ship That Isn't There
by Hamilton Barrett This site is located along the Great Highway at San Francisco's Ocean Beach, in the parking lot of the Beach Chalet Restaurant on the western edge of Golden Gate Park. The only monument here is a 12-foot "bauta," or stone shaft, made of Norwegian granite, and it features a relief of Roald Amundsen (1872-1928). The shaft has been here since 1930, and it marks where Amundsen's ship, the Gjoa (pronounced "Joe") was in dry-dock. It had been pulled ashore here in 1909, and placed on dry-dock display, after being given to the people of San Francisco from its Norwegian community. The ship's story is very much like the belief that unless you show someone you love them, they might go away. As a teenager I remember Amundsen's ship, and how the locals usually zipped by without stopping to read the plaque. In 1972 the ship was returned to Norway. The secret: Roald Amundsen was one of the world's most important explorers. Between 1903 and 1906 his crew were the first to navigate successfully the Northwest passage, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Along the way Amundsen's expedition had determined the position of the Magnetic North Pole. And the epic adventure was completed when this 69-foot sailing ship entered San Francisco in 1906. Its arrival was greeted with great celebration and acclaim.

There are serious environmental problems facing Antarctica. Tourism is a concern. More than 13,000 people visit Antarctic per year. They mainly travel on cruise ships. More pressing are problems concerning commercial fishing and ocean warning as they affect animals such as penguins and whales. Research shows that penguins are now stressed because of reduced fish populations in nearby waters. Whether this is a result of over fishing or global warming, it is hard to tell.
Questions for discussion:
How does the climate you live in differ from Antarctica?
What environmental problems face the continent?
How does Antarctica differ from the Arctic?
Why do people want to visit Antarctica nowadays?

. Signature: "Very sincerely yours/Roald Amundsen" From 1903-1906, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) was the first to navigate the Northwest Passage aboard his ship Gjoa After his hopes to become the first to reach the North Pole were dashed by news of Peary's successful assault, he turned his ship Fram south. On December 14, 1911, he and four members of his party became the first humans to stand on the South Pole. In 1926, Amundsen, Lincoln Ellsworth and Italian explorer Umberto Nobile flew across the North Pole. In 1928, Nobile was reported missing on his return from the North Pole. Amundsen flew to rescue him, but he disappeared and was never found. Ironically, Nobile was rescued and lived to see man walk on the Moon, dying in 1978 at the age of 93. Fine condition.

I registi.
