T The Atheist's Bible
Pious Americans were shocked by Thomas Paine's The Age of Reason , part of which was written during the great pamphleteer's imprisonment in Paris during the French Revolution. Although denounced as the "atheist's bible," Paine's work was actually an exposition of a radical kind of deism and made an attempt at critical biblical scholarship that anticipated modern efforts. Paine created a scandal by his sardonic and irreverent tone. Assertions that the virgin birth was "blasphemously obscene" and other similarly provocative observations convinced many readers that the treatise was the entering wedge in the United States of French revolutionary "infidelity."

Even before the publication of the Age of Reason , Thomas Paine was hated and feared for his political and religious radicalism by conservatives in England, where he had periodically lived since 1787. Paine fled to France in December 1792 to avoid trial for treason. In this cartoon, Paine sleeps on a straw pillow wrapped in an American flag, inscribed "Vive L' America." In his pocket is a copy of

TRACT
TRACT (from Lat. tractare, to treat of a matter, through Provenal tractat and Ital. trattato), in the literary signification, a work in which some particular subject, or aspect of a subject, is treated. As far as derivation is concerned, a tract is identical with a lreali.ce hut hv ruictnm the lsttpr word h,ui g-on,p ~o h~ i,~.d for a lengthy monograph oil a subject, dealing with it technically and authoritatively, whereas a tract is understood to be brief and rather argumentative than educational. There is, again, the rarer word tractate, which is not a tract, in the precise sense, so much as a short treatise. The most famous collection of tracts published in the course of the 19th century was that produced from 1833 onwards by Newman, Keble and E. B. Pusey, under the title of Tracts for the Times. Among these Puseys Tract on Baptism (1835) and his On the Holy Eucharist (1836) had a profound effect in leading directly to the foundation of the High Church party, so much so that the epithet Tractarian was barbarously coined to designate those who wished to oppose the spread of rationalism by a quickening of the Church of England. In 1841 Newmans Tract No. XC. was condemned by the heads of houses in Oxford, and led to the definite organization of the High Church forces. (X.) Bible, tract groups tailor biblical message for disasters By Adelle M. Banks
Religion News Service
September 24, 2001 As members of the staff of the American Tract Society gathered around their conference room television set on Sept. 11, they, like everyone else, were shocked by the terrorist acts. "Everybody was glued to the TV," recalled Mark Brown, spokesman of the ministry based in Garland, Texas. "We literally just dropped to our knees and asked God, `What can we do?'" The answer that came to them, said Brown, was to do what they always do: make tracts, small evangelistic pieces that relate the gospel to current times. Across the country, Bible societies and ministries such as the tract society have quickly responded to the nation's crisis by distributing portions of Scripture and brochures with Bible passages to encourage and inspire Americans. On Monday night, Gene Habecker, president of the Bible society, said he and other staffers on the street outside their building found that people of a variety of faiths welcomed the free Scriptures. He was particularly struck by one man who filled his bags with the booklets. "He said, `By the way, I'm Muslim and it's important that all of us during this time work hard to share the words of God with everyone that we know,'" Habecker recalled.

PREAMBLE Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC), which was first performed in 1985, has gained acceptance as the standard of care for patients requiring cholecystectomy. A NIH Consensus Development Conference held in September, 1992 (1) concluded that "LC provides a safe and effective treatment for most patients with symptomatic gallstones. Indeed, it appears to have become the procedure of choice for many of these patients." SAGES first offered guidelines for the clinical application of LC in May, 1990. This document provides revised and updated clinical guidelines for the performance of laparoscopic biliary tract surgery. THE ROLE OF THE GENERAL SURGEON It is the opinion of SAGES that for optimum quality of care, laparoscopic biliary tract surgery must be performed by surgeons who are qualified to perform open biliary tract surgery. Only such surgeons possess the skill and judgment required to perform these procedures safely. Only such surgeons can determine which patients require conversion to an open procedure and are then capable of performing that open procedure. OPERATIVE SETTING Laparoscopic biliary tract surgery should be performed in the operating room with appropriate equipment and personnel for both laparoscopic and open operations. A well-trained operating room team is essential.

THROUGH THE WILDERNESSES OF BRAZIL BY HORSE, CANOE AND FLOAT is an exciting real adventure story of life in the primitive areas of this South American country nearly a century ago.
Written by William Azel Cook and published in this apparent FIRST EDITION in 1909 by the American Tract Society, New York, the book features about 30 wonderful black/white photos to illustrate the text.
Azel was a Christian missionary to Brazil in the early 1900s and much of the text is taken from observations he made during that time, as well as from the stories of local natives.
Chapters cover “Expedition to the Araguaya and Tocantines,” “From the Rio Do Domno to the Sea,” “The Goyana Campaign,” “Expedition to Bororoland,” “The Rio Verde Expedition,” and “Last Words.” Coffee farms, medieval schools, primitive customs, Cherente Indians, the Karaya, fishing and hunting, canoe making, weapons, funerals, carnivals, religion, agriculture, the Karaoh Tribe, human bone-yards, the lottery, milk saloons, rum distilleries, cattle ranches, rubber forests and scores of other topics are discussed.
The book is a fascinating view of the country through the eyes of one who’s there. The 487-page hardbound book has a nicely decorated front cover that we’ve shown here. Condition is Good+, although it does have a few defects. Covers are clean and the gold on front is still very bright. There is some sun-fading on spine and some very minor edge/corner wear. A previous owner’s name is written on front endpaper. The front hinge is broken, but all pages are still tightly bound. The book is complete, clean and a nice copy of a scarce title! (26252/r26)
