The Gospel Message View dynamic Flash Presentation (Digitract) Although the writing style and design of American Tract's literature has changed and developed during its 178-year history, its central message has remained unshakably consistent. In fact, the gospel that is the centerpiece of most of our tracts is the same now as it was during the early Christian church when the apostles and disciples of Jesus Christ began to spread it to "the remotest part of the earth" (Acts 1:8).
From the beginning of time, according to the Bible, life was meant to be a richly satisfying experience. The purpose of life even included friendship with God! In fact, God created man and woman to enjoy His friendship in a perfect world of love and trust.
The Bible says that "God created [mankind] in His own image" (Genesis 1:27). He shared with them qualities similar to His ownintelligence, conscience, personality, speech, the ability to choose. The things that still give our lives meaning.

by S.J. Wolfe, cataloguer, American Antiquarian Society
The New England Religious Tract Society (also known as the New England Tract Society) was organized May 23, 1814 and incorporated in June 1816. The name was changed by an act of the Massachusetts legislature in June 1823 to "American Tract Society." In 1825 the Boston-based American Tract Society merged with the New-York Religious Tract Society to form a new organization, which called itself The American Tract Society. The American Tract Society (Boston, Mass.) became the New England Branch of the New York American Tract Society, while maintaining its autonomy. In 1859 a major break occurred between the two American Tract Societies, due to a difference of opinion over the issue of whether or not to publish tracts which concerned "the sin of slavery." The American Tract Society (Boston, Mass.) continued to publish and distribute tracts under the name "American Tract Society." The New York-based American Tract Society promptly (1859) opened a New England Branch in Boston; they also operated major branches in Rochester, N.Y.; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Chicago, Ill., and secondary New York city branch. (It would be impossible to list all of the cities which contained ATS branches-some cities contained more than one). The American Tract Society (Boston, Mass.) maintained major branches in New York City and in Chicago, Ill. as well as in other cities across the United States.

http://www.americanantiquarian.org/tracts.htm
About the Collections
Tracts
Tracts are usually small, pamphlet-type publications produced by an organization in order to disseminate information about that organization's interests, doctrines, or creeds. This collection consists of numbered tracts produced by a variety of tract societies such as the New England Tract Society, the Protestant Episcopal Tract Society, the American Reform Tract and Book Society, The Worcester Temperance League, the American Woman Suffrage Association, the American Peace Society and the Universalist Tract Society. Many of the organizations were national in scope, and some were very local, such as the Universalist Tract Society. Topics of the tracts varied, and included writings on religion, temperance, spiritualism, peace, women's suffrage, slavery, missions and conduct of life, among others. The collection contains over 2,200 numbered tracts published in the United States between 1810 and 1883. For the most part, all numbered tracts published by a particular tract society or organization have been fully cataloged online. Exceptions to this include "adult" tracts published by the American Tract Society, the American Sunday School Union, and the American Unitarian Association which date after 1840, as well as tracts for children which were produced by any organization or tract society. The latter have been fully cataloged online in the American Childrens' Book collection. Unnumbered tracts for adults that date through 1840 may be found in many other cataloged collections, including Dated Pamphlets, Dated Books, Pamphlets and the National and Local Institutions collections.

Small Collection 43 - Colporteur Letters of the American Tract Society
Small Collection 43 [May 6, 1998] American Tract Society; 1825- Colporteur Letters; 1854-1858 1 Folder Restrictions There are no restrictions on the use of this collection. Historical Background The American Tract Society, a nondenominational Christian publishing house, was founded in 1825 by the merger of several small printing establishments. Believing that a very effective and inexpensive way to reach most of the world's peoples with the story of Jesus Christ is through the printed page, the Society produces Christian books, booklets, magazines, and leaflets. Each year the Society made available to prisons, hospitals, and missionary organizations free materials for their distribution. Military servicemen in seven major wars were provided Christian literature by the Society as well as the cadets at West Point who received Bibles each year. In the 1840s, the Society began distribution of their materials through messengers, known as colporteurs. These men, preferably single, were usually ministers or seminary students who were sent out and supported by various societies. Occasionally called on to preach, their primary tasks were distribution of materials and fund raising. Financial support for the Society's ministry depended (as they do now) upon the charitable contributions of their Christian friends.
