Review
Mr Trotter discovered in the archives of Haslemere Museum a remarkable collection of notes and newspaper cuttings left by local journalist William Sillick, who died in 1955. It made him realise what an astounding flurry of important literary activity there had been in the neighbourhood of Haslemere during the fifty years or more following the arrival of the railway in 1859, and from this the book was conceived.
The book is organised into four main sections: a brief local chronology from 1859 through to the start of the First World War; a short discussion of the politics and other issues in vogue during the period; biographical notes on each of the writers; and an appendix of references and other more general notes, including a superb 20-page index.
It is a pleasure to read. Bob Trotter has not only encapsulated the essentials of these people’s lives in his pages, but also given us the benefit of his medical training to add his own fascinating personal comments. And in these days of generally slap-dash editing, it is nice for once to find a book where so much care and attention has obviously been taken in checking presentation and content before publication.

Who was he? Canadian born and Oxford educated, of Irish and French-Canadian descent, he wrote during the last thirty years of the reign of Queen Victoria and made a considerable place for himself in the world of letters as a novelist, short story writer and essayist. Combining a classical education with a scientific bent, his reputation among his contemporaries rested largely on his numerous articles in periodicals on subjects as far-ranging as popular science, politics, religion and moral dialectics. Two of his novels

He knew not why, but a fierce desire possessed his soul to stop and give way to this overpowering sense of the mysterious and the marvellous in the dark depths of the barrow. With an effort he roused himself and put on his hat, which he had been holding in his hand for his And even as he said it he was internally aware that his baffled foes, standing grinning their disappointment with gnashed teeth at the garden-gate, gave a chuckle of surprise, delight, and satisfaction at his altered intention.

That was why he had accepted Mrs. Bouverie-Barton's invitation to form part of her brilliant autumn party at Pallinghurst Manor, and that was also doubtless why he had been se absurdly frightened at nothing at all just now on the Common. Henry Archer, a disbanded Loyalist soldier, received a grant to Block 27, Lot A (54 Charlotte Street) on June 2, 1786 (recorded on December 2, 1786). The lot measured 40 feet along Charlotte Street, with 100 feet of depth on each side. A plan of July 20, 1786, drawn up by order of Governor Joseph Frederick Wallet DesBarres (1721-1824), illustrates a building on this property. The builder's name is unknown. Jerry Stokes
by Grant Allen
J ERRY S TOKES was a member of Her Majesty's civil service. To put it more plainly, he was the provincial hangman. Not a man in all Canada, he used to boast with pardonable professional pride, had turned off as many famous murderers as he had. He was a pillar of the constitution, was Jerry Stokes. He represented the Executive. And he wasn't ashamed of his office, either. Quite on the contrary, zeal for his vocation shone visible in his face. He called it a useful, a respectable, and a necessary calling. If it were not for him and his utensils, he loved to say to the gaping crowd that stood him treat in the saloons, no man's life would be safe for a day in the province. He was a practical philanthropist in his way, a public benefactor. It is not good that foul crime should stalk unpunished through the land; and he, Jerry Stokes, was there to prevent it. He was the chosen instrument for its salutary repression: Executions performed with punctuality and despatch; for terms, apply to Jeremiah Stokes, Port Hope, Ontario.
