Where'd you get your money?" asked the man, who was a porter in the employ of a firm doing business on Spruce Street. "Made it by shines, in course. My guardian don't allow me no money for theatres, so I have to earn it." "Some boys get it easier than that," said the porter significantly. "You don't catch me stealin', if that's what you mean," said Dick. "Don't you ever steal, then?" "No, and I wouldn't. Lots of boys does it, but I wouldn't." "Well, I'm glad to hear you say that. I believe there's some good in you, Dick, after all." "Oh, I'm a rough customer!" said Dick. "But I wouldn't steal. It's mean." Mark Twain parodied him. Mencken no doubt relegated him to the realm of conventional uplift and boosterism.

Starting his formal education at age 10 he went on to graduate from Harvard Divinity School in 1852 where he was ranked eight in a class of eighty-nine. While attending Harvard he studied under Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and intended to become a poet.

Ragged Dick or, Street Life in New York
Author Info: Horatio Alger
Your great grandfathers read them by the fistful. Even your grandfathers probably read at least a few of them. But the days when Horatio Alger was one of the most widely read authors in America have long since passed. Alger's messagethat by dint of hard work, decent morals, good manners and a hefty serving of luck, any American boy can rise from rags to richesis so clearly anathema to the literati that his dismissal by the critics and the continuing refusal to treat his work as anything other than simple-minded boosterism was virtually foreordained. However, you would think that Alger's novels would warrant greater scrutiny simply for their obvious cultural impact. It is not an overstatement to say that it is likely that every significant man of business, politics, literature and academia in America in the early decades of this century had read the works of Horatio Alger. How can you hope to understand these men and the America that they forged if you ignore the one author who was most likely a formative influence on them? More than that, it is certainly the case that except for a couple of decades of despair brought on by the Great Depression, it is, has been, and seems sure to remain, the uniquely American idea that anyone can succeed. It is amazing the number of times you will hear folks from foreign countries speak about how this perception of unlimited possibilities is something that you only find in America (Howard Evans on Booknotes one night springs to mind). This after all is why we are the one nation that welcomes immigrants. Other countries assume that immigrants will just get on the dole and stay there; we assume they will not only succeed, but will flourish. Alger is certainly not the originator of these belief, but his millions of books must have contributed something to this entrepreneurial spirit that informs the national soul.

Horatio Alger by Carrie Conger Links to Online Resources Books and Articles Horatio Alger was born January thirteenth to the daughter to a wealthy landowner and a Unitarian minister. His education did not begin until he was six years of age, taught by his father. At the age of sixteen, Alger entered Harvard, earning his tuition by running errands for the president. While at Harvard, he excelled at academics, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and was a member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity.
Horatio Alger , 1832-1899
His series was popular until the publishers stopped issuing them, which was in the 1920's. Some reasons for this may be that his stories, "…even though their plots, characterizations, and dialogue were consistently, even outrageously bad," (Britannica, par. 3), Brought hope to the working man, because the cheerful, diligent, virtuous character in is book always got the wonderful reward he deserved. The Horatio Alger Society now gives a Horatio Alger Award to individuals that achieve success trough self-reliance, decency, honesty, and self-discipline, who are, in short, characters from a Horatio Alger novel, pulling themselves up by the bootstraps and claiming their American Dream.

Dime Novels
It is a satisfaction that ... they are without exception, so far as we can judge, unobjectionable morally, whatever fault be found with their literary style and composition. They do not even obscurely pander to vice, or excite the passions. North American Review, 1864 I was wandering around a flea market last summer when I saw a stack of books displayed beneath a sign that said "DIME NOVELS." Naturally, the first thought that popped into my head was "Hooray! Bargain books!" Imagine my surprise when I noticed that the books in question were priced between US$10 and $40 each. At this point, the bookseller wandered over and, sensing both my ignorance and my interest, explained that dime novels are cheaply made paperbacks from the 1800s that were originally sold as part of a series for 10 cents per book (hence, the name). The most popular books involved pioneers, Indians and the American Revolutionary War. Formula westerns featuring legendary characters like Buffalo Bill, Deadwood Dick, Frank Merriwell, Calamaty Jane and Jesse James were especially popular with the primarily adolescent male readership. These stories promote the sterotypical American values of rugged individualism, courage and patriotism. Horatio Alger stories (also known as city stories) were also very popular.

http://www.owlnet.rice.edu/~mwfriedm/terms/anna15.html
Back to terms page United States vs. E.C. Knight Company (1895)
Facts: The E.C. Knight Company w/ four other companies made a deal with the American Sugar Refining Company: ASRC would purchase stocks and properties of these corporations and issue ASRC stocks. The government charged that this transaction violated the Sherman Anti-Trust Act because it intended to control sugar prices with a monopoly of the manufacture and sale of refined sugar.
Issue: Assuming the existence of a monopoly in manufacture, can the monopoly be directly suppressed under the act of Congress?
Decision: No. (vote 8-1)
Reason: OK I found this a little confusing…The power to control manufacturing involves the control of its naturebut only in a secondary sense. Exercising this power brings commerce into playbut only indirectly. Commerce regulation applies to subjects of commerce, not to subjects of internal police. The fact that an article is manufactured with an intent of export to another state does not of itself make such an article an item of interstate commerce. It becomes so when it begins its journey in interstate commerce.
The Act of 1890 did not attempt to deal with monopolies as such, but with conspiracies to monopolize trade among the several states. In the case at hand, the object was private gain from manufacture of the commodity, not control of interstate or foreign commerce. There was nothing in the proofs to indicate any intention to put a restraint upon trade or commerce. (The rule of this case is no longer good law having been overruled by later cases, notably N.L.R.B. v. Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp.)
