PART VII
Thomas Bailey Aldrich Edited by Roger E. Stoddard "Thomas Bailey Aldrich (1836-1907), pioneer collector of first editions by New England authors, was twice the subject of privately-printed collectors' guides ... A clever minor poet, sometime editor of The Atlantic Monthly, author of the admired tale "Marjorie Daw," Aldrich brought freshness and candor to the American boy's book with his The Story of a Bad Boy (1869, 70). That evocation of his childhood in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, inspired his friends C.D. Warner, W.D. Howells, and S.L. Clemens to follow suit with some eminent results." Contains: 88 printed titles; 9 manuscripts. 30 kb Louise Imogen Guiney Edited by Joan St.C. Crane "Louise Guiney was a meticulous scholar and fastidious in the use of words, but she did not regard herself or her work very seriously. She was unencumbered with ambition beyond a desire to salvage the eclipsed reputations of other worthies (Robert Emmett, Hurrell Froude, Henry Vaughan, Lady Danvers, Katherine Philips). ... Success and its attendant fame were to her a bit of a joke. Ultimately, she achieved a virtue she most admired, enunciated in 'The Precept of Peace': la divine indifference.

His "Story of a Bad Boy" (1869) is still in print and inspired Mark Twain's mischevious Tom Sawyer. As a poet and editor of The Atlantic Monthly, Aldrich mixed with the Boston lieterati. But he never forgot his childhood days at Grampa Nutter's house in Portsmouth, today a museum. His compact history of Portsmouth, An Old Town by the Sea, is still a readable guide to the old port. Portsmouth's "Bad Boy"
What is the price of fame in Furby-Lewinsky land?
Click for more on life of Aldrich Beware all ye who lusteth after fame and glory, for today's exalted Furby is tomorrow's discarded Power Ranger. Case in point: Thomas Bailey Aldrich, arguably the best known writer in Portsmouth history. Once one of America's superstars, Aldrich was rated seventh out of 40 top male writers by an 1884 literary magazine reader poll, outranking Bret Harte, Henry James, Walt Whitman and Mark Twain. Today his name recognition falls miles below famous monikers like Lewinsky, Flowers, Tripp, Jones, Willey and the entire cast of Gilligan's Island. So what happened? Thomas Bailey Aldrich was best known as a poet, in an era when people read poetry. Born in Portsmouth in 1836, Tom was just 19 when he tasted his first intoxicating six-pack of fame. Like his contemporary Oliver Wendell Holmes , who penned the popular poem "Old Ironsides" at an early age, Aldrich hit a nerve with readers. His "Ballad of Baby Bell" was a romantic tale of an infant's death. By this time Aldrich , whose father was a salesman, had moved around the country. His family ended up in New Orleans, then back in Portsmouth, then off to New York City when Tom's father died suddenly. Unable to attend Harvard as planned, "Baby Bell" was Aldrich's ticket out of his uncles' New York warehousing business.
