Thomas Bailey Aldrich remained essentially a New Englander all his days. It is true that he never sympathized with the occupations of the New England mind in his time, and that his dedication of his art to beauty is not in the tradition of that “reformatory and didactic” section, and that, on the other hand, New York left its metropolitan imprint on nearly all his work. Yet most of his career belongs to New England, and he himself liked to say that if he was not genuine Boston he was at least Boston-plated; nor is it quite fanciful to assert that his somewhat painful artistic integrity is largely a re-orientation of New England principle and thoroughness. In him, Puritan morality, after passing through Hawthorne, half artist and half moralist, becomes wholly artistic.

    28. The Story Of A Bad Boy. Thomas Bailey Aldrich. Review
Thomas Bailey Aldrich (18361907). Read a biography of Aldrich. Read twosonnets by William Braithwaite, On the Death of Thomas Bailey Aldrich.
    http://capecodhistory.us/books/BadBoy.htm
The Story of a Bad Boy Aldrich was a contemporary and friend of Mark Twain. This book is said to be a partial inspiration for Tom Sawyer, and that seems plausible. It is interesting juvenile semi-fiction and semi-biography, set in the 1840's or early 1850's. It's decades past the War of 1812, tho that is still an older adult memory, and well before the Civil War. The place is mostly Portsmouth NH (called Rivermouth here), altho it begins in New Orleans. The boy, Tom Bailey, is brought by his parents from New Orleans to live with his grandfather in Rivermouth. This presents the opportunity to introduce the people and town of Rivermouth, and to amuse us with the peculiar concepts of the North held by some Southerners then. His voyage on the sailing ship Typhoon is interesting, and they land in Boston. Boston is very different from New Orleans, and then the trip to Rivermouth is by train - a memorable trip, traveling at a fearful rate. His descriptions of the house and town presumably were nostalgic memories even when the book was written. His new household consists of Tom, Grandfather Captain Nutter, Miss Abigail Nutter (the Captain's sister), and their Irish housekeeper, Kitty Collins (for light ethnic contrast). The household was run by old people, in the old Puritan New England manner, so evenings were quiet, and Sundays were stifling. Tom is homesick, but he has a pony he loves, and Grandfather puts him in school (boys only, apparently private). The boys tease and test him, he finds a compatible group, and the rest of the stories involve Tom as a leader of this troop, the Rivermouth Centipedes. They ramble thru the woods and at the shore; they put on a play, play baseball and marbles, and play pranks around town. Tom trains his pony and fights the bully. The constables are called out when the North-side versus South-side snowball fights get serious.

    37. The Story Of A Bad Boy
~ ~. Thomas Bailey Aldrich (18361907), famed editor of The AtlanticMonthly , was a contemporary of Mark Twain and Louisa May Alcott.
    http://moriah.wasim.com/Words/Essays/badboy.htm
The Story of A Bad Boy [Note: I was asked by a few people for copies of the essay that I wrote for my scholarship application, so I decided to post it here for convenience. I was requested to write about one book that I had read during my highschool education, and I was given a 600-700 word limit. This was the first essay I had ever written.] Thomas Bailey Aldrich (1836-1907), famed editor of "The Atlantic Monthly", was a contemporary of Mark Twain and Louisa May Alcott. He was one of the first authors to break away from the customary mold of writing stories of model boys and girls, who were set forth as examples for the audience of the day. Instead, he chose to write realistically about children for his reader's entertainment and enrichment. His writing style, which is concise and captivating, is well paced in his 1869 tale titled The Story of A Bad Boy. Due to the fact that the novel is partly autobiographical, Aldrich writes with realism, portraying not only the joys of life, but also its sorrows. He successfully conveys the struggles and growing pains that all children experience as they make the transition from childhood to adulthood. The story is told to the readers by the adult Tom Bailey, who, with the knowledge and wisdom gained only by years of experience, reflects back on past events in his own and his comrades' lives, adding to the charm of the novel.

    An Aldrich Comment
in an 1889 note on Jewett from The Berwick Scholar
Sarah Orne Jewett contributes "The Luck of the Bogans" to the January Scribner's , and "A Winter Courtship" to the February Atlantic . We cannot help noting here the delicate little criticism-compliment that Thomas Baily Aldrich gives Miss Jewett at the conclusion of his article in "Old Sticks" in the before mentioned number of Scribner's Magazine .** It is this: "The few old-fashioned men and women, quaint, shrewd and racy, of the soilwho linger in pleasant mouse-colored old homesteads strung along the New England roads and by-ways, will shortly cease to exist as a class except in the record of some such charming chroniclers as Sarah Jewett, on whose sympathetic page they have already taken to themselves a remote air, an atmosphere of long kept lavender and penny-royal." Notes This note appeared in The Berwick Scholar, Vol. II. No. 6. Berwick Academy, February, 1889. Jewett was an alumna of the Academy and contributed an essay on education, "Unlearned Lessons," to this issue. Thomas Bailey Aldrich (1836-1907) was editor of Atlantic Monthly 1881-1890. The author of fiction and poetry, Aldrich and his wife were close friends of Jewett and Annie Fields.
