L ouisa May Alcott was an American author who wrote sensational tales and thrillers, but achieved fame with her semi-autobiographical book, Little Women Louisa May Alcott was born November 29, 1832, in Germantown, Pennsylvania, the second of four daughters of Abba May and Bronson Alcott. Louisa and her sisters, Anna, Elizabeth, and May grew up in Massachusetts with significant New England authors such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Margaret Fuller as friends and neighbors. The entire Alcott family was talented and immensely literate. Though often unemployed, Bronson Alcott was a transcendentalist philosopher and radical educator who had a profound influence on Louisa's life. Louisa never married, yet from a fairly young age she began helping support her entire family by working as a domestic, a teacher, and eventually a writer. While never directly involved, Alcott was a staunch abolitionist and supported the women's suffrage and temperance movements. Her feminist views are best seen in the sensational tales and thrillers of female power, unhappiness, and revenge she wrote under the pseudonym "A.M. Barnard." In 1868, Alcott responded to a publisher's request for a "girls' book." Drawing upon the journals she was encouraged to keep as a girl and her memories and experiences of her own family and growing up, Alcott produced the domestic novel

Little Women
By Louisa May Alcott QUOTATION: Love is a great beautifier.
QUOTATION: It takes two flints to make a fire.
QUOTATION: Rome took all the vanity out of me; for after seeing the wonders there, I felt too insignificant to live, and gave up all my foolish hopes in despair.
QUOTATION: Girls are so queer you never know what they mean. They say No when they mean Yes, and drive a man out of his wits for the fun of it.
QUOTATION: Conceit spoils the finest genius. There is not much danger that real talent or goodness will be overlooked long; even if it is, the consciousness of possessing and using it well should satisfy one, and the great charm of all power is modesty.

It was an immediate best seller, bringing the thirty-five-year-old Alcott a popularity she did not expect: "I plod away, though I don't really enjoy this sort of thing. Never liked girls or knew many, except my sisters, but our queer plays and experiences may prove interesting, though I doubt it." Louisa May Alcott: Bomb to Best-Seller The critics had panned Louisa May Alcott's first novel, Moods , calling it melodramatic and unbelievable. At the urging of her father's publisher, she reluctantly turned to juvenile literature an autobiographical novel which, she sarcastically assured her publisher, would be made from characters "as ordinary as possible."

Louisa May Alcott
Louisa May Alcott was born on November 29, 1832, in Germantown, Pennsylvania. She spent her childhood in Boston and Concord, Massachusetts, where she met Ralph Waldo Emerson and took nature walks with Henry David Thoreau. When her family encountered financial difficulties, Alcott took on any jobs she could find and was eventually able to turn her love for writing into a source of income as several of her poems and short stories appeared in popular magazines. Her first book, Flower Fables, was published in 1855. Then, during the Civil War, Alcott moved to Washington, D.C. to serve as a nurse, where she contracted typhoid as well as mercury poisoning from the medicines used to cure it at the time, from which she would suffer for the rest of her life. However, she was able to turn her experiences in Washington into Hospital Sketches, which was published in 1863. Soon after, her publisher, Thomas Niles, asked her to write “a story for girls.” In two and half months, Alcott wrote Little Women, which was based on her own experiences of growing up with three sisters. It was published in 1868, and became an immediate success. In the years before her death on March 6th, 1888, Alcott published over 30 books and collections of short stories, leaving a legacy of wonderful stories to be enjoyed by generations of young readers.

Louisa May Alcott Author of Little Women and Little Men by Patricia Chadwick http://www.historyswomen.com Due to the family’s low income and the burdens of her mother, Louisa felt compelled to become a wage earner to help support the family, so she taught school, served as a governess, worked as a domestic servant, traveling companion, and took in work as a seamstress. She was later to use these experiences in her novels. Becoming weary of menial tasks, she began to write sensational stories, such as thrillers, for the local papers which were financially lucrative. At this time she wrote mostly anonymously or using a pseudonym. But her conscience was not easy in this matter, and she abandoned the writing of such tales. Instead, she began writing from her experiences and her confidence began to grow.

Louisa May Alcott
Louisa May was the second daughter of Amos Bronson Alcott and Abigail May Alcott . As with his first daughter, Anna Bronson Alcott , Bronson made careful observations of Louisa's behavior as an infant and upon these based unpublished manuscripts. As early as age 16 Louisa dreamed of adding to the family's meager income through writing. Before writing, however, she was employed as a teacher at various schools and in late 1862 and early 1863 served as an army nurse in Washington, DC. Unfortunately, this experience left her with typhoid-pneumonia and mercury poisoning that plagued her health the rest of her life. Among her first works were Flower Fables Hospital Sketches (1863), and Moods (1865, 1882). Thanks to Louisa's generosity and hard work as a popular and prolific children's author, the Alcott family finally was able to obtain enough money to escape poverty. Of her many poems, plays, novels, and short stories, her most famous are Little Women (1868 - 1869) and Little Men
