    What is Haiku?
Haiku is one of the most important form of traditional japanese poetry. Haiku is, today, a 17-syllable verse form consisting of three metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. Since early days, there has been confusion between the three related terms Haiku, Hokku and Haikai. The term hokku literally means "starting verse", and was the first starting link of a much longer chain of verses known as haika. Because the hokku set the tone for the rest of the poetic chain, it enjoyed a privileged position in haikai poetry, and it was not uncommon for a poet to compose a hokku by itself without following up with the rest of the chain. Largely through the efforts of Masaoka Shiki, this independence was formally established in the 1890s through the creation of the term haiku.

Shinchosha, Tokyo 1994, pp. 65-135.

    RYUNOSUKE AKUTAGAWA (1892-1927)
Morì suicida a trentacinque anni.

"Eiga monogatari (A tale of flowering fortunes)" is a historical tale of the 11th century. The first 30 chapters are often attributed to Akazome Emon, and the last 10 to Idewa no Ben. It is the first historical work written in the Kana syllabary. It is also the first of the rekishi monogatari genre, which are fictionalized or embellished accounts of historical events and figures. Eiga was translated into English by Berkeley's professors, William H. and Helen Craig McCullough.

Novelists experimented with 'new' ideas such as liberalism, idealism, and romanticism and were variously influenced by French, British or German literature. One writer who came to Japan and became the first foreigner to truly capture the essence of the country in his work was Lafcadio Hearn , better known in Japan by his adopted name Koizumi Yakumo Kwaidan , a collection of ghost stories, is perhaps best known by Japanese people. The period between the turn of the century and the domination of militarism in the 1930's produced three great writers: Mori Ogai Natsume Soseki and his protoge Akutagawa Ryunosuke Ogai (1862-1922) gave up an early literary career to concentrate on his work as a doctor with the Japanese army, returning to writing only after his retirement. He was inspired mainly by German literature and played a leading role in the Japanese romantic literary movement. He wrote poetry, drama and historical biography, but his best work of fiction is considered to be his novel

Little Known Kyoto: - The Gate Known as Rajomon / Rashomon The Emperor Kammu created his new capital, Heian-Kyo (Kyoto) in 784 AD, and styled it on the rectangular Chinese city design. Rashomon (or Rajomon) was the name of the great southern gate that traversed the southern boundary of the central street (Suzaku Avenue) - the street that led directly to the Nijo, the Imperial Palace (Rajomon means literally "castle gate"). The gate may no longer have existed by the time of the great writers of the Heian era, such as Sei Shonagon and Murasaki Shikibu According to the nearby notice, the gate had two storeys; and excavations reveal it had an approximate width of 32 metres and depth of 8 metres- larger than the nandaimon at Nara's Todaiji temple. With its brilliant painted and tiled décor, it was one of the two most spectacular gates of the city (together with the suzakumon at the Imperial Palace). The gate lent its name to, and provided the central setting for a famed story by Japanese writer Akutagawa Ryunosuke (1892-1927), Rashomon . Kurasawa Akira made a noted film in 1951 with the same name and setting, but this was mainly based on another of Akutagawa's stories-

    O Nariz Ryunosuke Akutagawa
Akutagawa, Ryunosuke (1892-1927).

Book review: Excellence This book is a collection of short stories written by the eminent Japanese author, Ryunosuke Akutagawa (1892-1927). These six stories tend to revolve around moral ambiguities. 1) In A Grove is the story of a murder, whose witnesses all tell different, often mutually exclusive stories. 2) Rashomon is the story of a discharged servant who must choose between death and a life of crime and dishonor. 3) Yam Gruel tells the story of Goi, a samurai whose life falls to pieces as he dreams of the rare delicacy yam gruel, and who finds that having is not always as wonderful as wanting. 4) The Martyr reaches back to the 16th Century, to tell the story of a model Christian young man, who is excommunicated when he refuses to recognize a child attributed to him, but the truth he hides is not what everyone thinks. 5) Kesa And Morito is a tale of lust and betrayal. 6) The Dragon is the story of Hanazo, or priest who sets out to play a joke, but learns the power of belief.

All 6 stories flow beautifully fast as you quietly become emotionally wrapped up in them. The deceptive sheen of these stories almost antagonizes you into finding something amiss, only that you'll discover later, after some thought, that there was yet another unseen perspective or line of thought within the work. 'In A Grove' is a very unsetteling story, and obviously the most well-known, but I felt that 'The Matyr' and 'Kisa and Morito' are both very witty, and also my favourites. I imagine, that a lot of people will now get a chance to read this book due in part to the media coverage that came from the movie 'Ghost Dog', with Forest Whittaker, where the book itself played a supporting role. It's not hard to understand, after reading, why. This book gives you insight into persepctive, humiliation, accepting fate - even if it is not a good one, and following the path you've chosen.
