Siblings Wife Catherine Children ... Friends
S cenes of family harmony and cozy firesides in many of Dickens' stories seem in stark contrast to his own family life. Growing up, the family situation was often precarious due to his father's trouble with debt, which landed him in debtors' prison in 1824 when Charles was 12.
Later Dickens' own family was marked by strife as his relationship with his wife deteriorated and his sons seemed to have inherited their paternal grandfather's trouble handling finances. Dickens once lamented that he had "brought up the largest family with the smallest disposition for doing anything for themselves". Dickens' extended familie's constant drain on his finances, along with his built-in anxiety about money caused by his childhood, resulted in Dickens never feeling comfortable enough about his financial situation.
Dickens' circle of friends consisted of people prominent in the arts, journalism, publishing, politics and public life. A loyal friend who demanded loyalty in return, lines were drawn during Dickens' very public separation from Catherine. Those not sympathetic to Dickens' side soon felt his wrath, in some cases, forever.

Rookwood:
Dick Turpin's ride to York
(c. 1834, this ed.?)
by William Harrison Ainsworth
A RRIVED at the brow of the hill, whence such a beautiful view of the country surrounding the metropolis is obtained, Turpin turned for an instant to reconnoitre his pursuers. Coates and Titus he utterly disregarded; but Paterson was a more formidable foe, and he well knew that he had to deal with a man of experience and resolution. It was then, for the first time, that the thoughts of executing his extraordinary ride to York first flashed across him; his bosom throbbed high with rapture, and he involuntarily exclaimed aloud, as he raised himself in the saddle, "By God! I will do it!" * *Since the earlier editions of this Romance were published, we regret to state (for to us, at least, it is matter of regret, though probably not to the travellers along the Edgeware-road) that this gentle ascent has been cut through, and the fair prospect from its brow utterly destroyed.
Accordingly, as Turpin was by no means desirous of inconveniencing his mare in this early stage of the business, and as the ground was still upon an ascent, the parties preserved their relative distances.

Also, this collection includes letters from and to a variety of correspondents, Mark Lemon's Circle, including John Forster, Alfred B. Garrod, Sir Stratford Canning, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Emma C. Roberts, and others; and autograph envelopes from W. Harrison Ainsworth and others. Finally, five original pencil drawings attributed to "Phiz" (Hablot K. Browne?) are present. The collection is arranged chronologically. This collection was purchased from book dealer David Holmes by Kent State University Libraries and the Department of English on December 1995.

Ainsworth, William Harrison
4 February 1805 - 3 January 1882
Prolific early/mid-Victorian novelist and magazine editor/owner, early mentor to and influence upon the young Charles Dickens , and best known for his historical fiction and "Newgate novels" (sensationalized treatments of the lives and exploits of criminals). As far as the Gothic is concerned, his account of English witchcraft, The Lancashire Witches [1849], is perhaps his most well-known effort, although many other works, such as Rookwood [1834], are heavily laden with Gothic motifs, images, scenariosand rip-offs; Ainsworth wasn't above some heavy borrowing. I am inclined to see Rookwood as perhaps the last real "Gothic" work, a honor usually granted to Charles Maturin 's 1820 masterpiece Melmoth the Wanderer
While Ainsworth's fiction can be delightfully readable, with considerable energy and verveas long as you're comfortable with structural lapses and melodramait is impossible to say he did much to advance the evolution of Gothic/post-Gothic literature. Quite popular in the 1830s and 1840s (beginning with the publication of Rookwood ), Harrison Ainsworth is not much read today. One short work, "The Specter Bride" (published in 1822) is sometimes still found in anthologies and is attributed to Ainsworth, though personally I have some doubts as to Ainsworth's authorship.
