Ainsworth, William Harrison (18051882), English novelist, son of Thomas Ainsworth, solicitor, was born at Manchester on the 4th of February 1805.

AINSWORTH, W. HARRISON
AINSWORTHAINU Song of Solomon (1623). These were collected in folio in 1627, and again in 1639, and later in various forms. From the outset the Annotations took a commanding place, especially among continental scholars, and he established for English nonconformity a tradition of culture and scholarship. There is no probability about the narrative given by Neal in his History of the Puritans (ii. 47) that he was poisoned by certain Jews. He died in 1622, or early in 1623, for in that year was published his Seasonable Discourse, or a Censure upon a Dialogue of the Anabaptists, in which the editor speaks of him as a departed worthy. The house is entailed, of course, and so is the estate
Entailing means that conditions are set on the house and estate and limits how it may be used and sold. These conditions are passed down through inheiritance, so a son who gets his father's house and property may be prohibited from selling it, breaking up the land, or putting it to certain uses. This can pose serious problems should the son be financially unable to keep up appearances. He's something in the City a director of a company connected with silk stockings
The city, of course, meaning London. Searching for "silk stockings" on google.com can lead to embarassing encounters with unsavory sites, but I would have to guess in this case it's a reference to bankers, who tend to wear socks of finer materials than the proletariat. 86 ~ Blue pill and black draught
I picked this phrase up reading the Napoleonic War novels of Patrick O'Brian. Naval surgeons used "blue pill and black draught" (last word pronounced draft) to treat a wide variety of illnesses. Most of the time, it was a placebo, with the pills made out of colored chalk, and the draught from a collection of various potions, flavored with nasty-tasting herbs like hellebore. From the sailor's point of view, the worst the medicine tasted, the more effective it was.

Midge Margret, a young woman who has escaped an abusive husband, is a member of itinerant gypsy-like folk called tinkers, who support themselves through metal-working and begging. She is befriended by the young Walter Scott (who would later write Ivanhoe and other great historical novels) when he, in his role as sheriff of Selkirk, investigates the death of a young woman. A hard winter brings the tinkers to camp in the outskirts of Edinborough. First one young tinker maiden, then another, is kidnapped and the bones of a recently-killed young woman are found in a drained loch. Midge Margret discovers items belonging to one disappeared maiden and eventually appeals to Scott, now sheriff of Edinborough, to locate the lost girls. Scott, along with his literary friend James Hogg, soon discover that there is more than an overzealous grave-robber at work. Midge Margret and Walter Scott, each in their own way, approach the secret behind the disappearances, and soon find themselves up against a demented necromancer.
