ADAMS (OLIVER OPTIC) (1822-1897) William Taylor Adams, better known by his pen name "Oliver Optic," was born in Medway, Massachusetts, July 30, 1822. His father, Laban Adams, was at that time the proprietor of a tavern in Boston, but in 18 38 he moved to a farm in West Roxbury. William received his schooling first in Boston and later obtained what he could while doing farm work. He then traveled for a year in the South and upon his return assisted his father in the management of the "Adams House," built on the site of the former tavern. After a short time, however, he obtained the principalship of the grammar school at Dorchester, at that time a village but now a suburb of Boston, and while there was married, in 1846, to Sarah Jenkins, by whom he had two daughters. He continued to teach in various Boston schools for twenty years, and at the same time wrote many short stories and books. In 1865 he resigned to devote his entire time to literature, although he retained his interest in the public schools. He was a member of the Massachusetts State Legislature for one year but declined a renomination. He died March 27, 1897, at his home in Dorchester. His first book was written in 1853 under the pen name "Warren T. Ashton."1 It was called "Hatchie, the Guardian Slave; or, The Heiress of Bellevue. A Tale of the Mississippi and the South-West," and for it he received $37.50[!] from a Boston publisher. Most of his short stories and books were written for boys. His style was so pleasing, his plots so interesting, and the action so lively, that he was very successful and had a very large following of youthful readers. He had the ability of writing stories that were so natural and everyday in their setting that his boy readers unconsciously became in imagination the heroes themselves. Mount Clemens in Prose and Poetry In the heyday of the bath era, the population of Mount Clemens often doubled during the summer season when visitors came from all over the country to take the healing waters. Among the visitors were the rich and famous of the day, including a number of writers and poets. Mount Clemens was immortalized in the prose and poetry of several of these scribes. An early appearance of Mount Clemens in the pages of literature came in 1877, when the town was used as the model for the setting of the novel Out West, Or, Roughing it on the Great Lakes , by William Taylor Adams (1822-1897). Adams wrote stories for boys under the pen name of Oliver Optic. The hero of his story is a young man named Alick, originally from a New England seaport, who seeks adventure on the Great Lakes in his sailing vessel, the Lakebird. In his travels, Alick makes his way up the "Glinton" River from Lake St. Clair, to the town of Montomercy, a place famous for its healing mineral baths. While sailing the lake one day, Alick picks up a passenger, a Mr. Garningham, who had come to the mouth of the river from town. Alick's passenger is introduced to the readers in this small passage from the story: [Mr Garningham]: "I am an Englishman, travelling in the States for my health, which is bad. When I was in Canada, I heard of the Mineral Springs of Montomercy; and I am staying in that place at the Sherman House for three or four weeks. The mineral water is benefiting me, but I shall die for the want of some way to amuse myself."

In his lifetime, he collected a significant number of rare Hebraic and Semitic writings authored by noted rabbinical scholars, Christian Hebraists and Orientalists. His collection, consisting of six hundred titles, is currently housed at the University of Altdorf. It includes various editions of the Bible and Talmud, works which describe the life and customs of the Jews, as well as historical, philosophic, and philological works.
