ADAMS, SAMUEL
, American revolutionary political leader. The son of a Boston merchant and maltster, Adams was a 1740 graduate of Harvard College where he publicly defended the thesis that it is "lawful to resist the Supreme Magistrate, if the Commonwealth cannot be otherwise preserved." Adherence to this principle was ever afterward a central theme in his career. After failing as a brewer and newspaper publisher, Adams found that his chief preoccupation, politics, was his true calling. Following lengthy experience in Boston town affairs, he rose to prominence in the Massachusetts assembly during the opposition to the Stamp Act in 1765. An organizer of Boston's Sons of Liberty, he played a key role from 1765 until the end of the War of Independence in Patriot opposition to what Adams believed was a British plot to destroy constitutional liberty. Adams's contributions to the independence movement were many and varied. During the 1760s and 1770s he frequently wrote polemical articles for the Boston newspapers, and he recruited talented younger men—Josiah Quincy, Joseph Warren, and his second cousin John Adams, among others—into the Patriot cause. It was Samuel Adams who conceived of the Boston Committee of Correspondence and took a leading role in its formation and operations from 1772 through 1774. He was among those who planned and coordinated Boston's resistance to the Tea Act, which climaxed in the famous Tea Party, and he later worked for the creation of the Continental Congress, helping propel it into supporting Massachusetts in the crisis.

Adams, Samuel
, Revolutionary War leader. Adams, a Boston radical, gave voice to the colonial demand for independence through his speeches and writings. He opposed the Sugar Act , the Stamp Act , and the Townshend Acts , and helped organize the Sons of Liberty and the Committees of Correspondence . In 1773 Adams was one of the planners of the Boston Tea Party ; when Britain responded by passing the Intolerable Acts , he urged the boycott of British goods. He worked for the creation of the Continental Congress and served as a Massachusetts delegate to that body ; he signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Although Adams at first opposed ratification of the Constitution , he ultimately supported it in Massachusetts. Adams later succeeded John Hancock as governor of Massachusetts

Adams, Samuel Adams, Samuel (1722-1803), American patriot, one of the leaders of resistance to British policy in Massachusetts before the American Revolution. Adams decisively influenced every important aspect of the prerevolutionary struggle against British rule. In the realm of practical politics, he promoted the formation of the Boston chapter of the Sons of Liberty and sponsored the Committee of Correspondence of Boston. He led the fight against the Townshend Acts, headed the demonstrations that led to the Boston Massacre, directed the Boston Tea Party, and figured significantly in other outstanding events of the period. He rapidly acquired an intercolonial reputation both through these activities and as a literary agitator and revolutionary ideologist. Many of his writings, chiefly political pamphlets, were widely circulated and read. A proponent of the natural rights of man, he was in the vanguard of those Americans who challenged the authority of the British Parliament and championed rebellion. Stylistically, his writings are lucid, forceful, and epigrammatic. Adams's contributions to the

September 27 ~  Events Which Excite Sam Adams
"We cannot m a k e events. Our business is wisely to improve them... M a n k in d are governed more by their feelings than by r e a s o n. Events which excite those feelings will produce w o n d e r f u l effects." ~ Samuel Adams Called "the Man of the Revolution" by Thomas Jefferson , patriot and politician Samuel Adams (1722-1803) was born on this day in Boston, Massachusetts and graduated from Harvard. The cousin of John Adams, Samuel worked in his father's brewery before turning to politics. "While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued," he said. "Once they lose their virtue, they will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader." A skilled writer and orator, Adams was a passionate advocate against England's rule over the colonies. He and his fellow Sons of Liberty revolutionaries played a central role in organizing the Boston Tea Party of 1773. Known for his patience and strong self-discipline, Adams was a close friend of John Hancock and member of the Continental Congress. He signed the Declaration of Independence and was elected governor of Massachusetts from 1793 to 1797.

If you wanted to set up an organization, stage a protest or overthrow a government, he was your man. Adams (cousin of another great Revolutionary, John Adams) had considered becoming a preacher—his style was evangelical enough—but studied law instead, and found his true calling as a politician. He first became interested in the politics of the day as a result of his father's troubles with the authorities. Samuel's own clashes with the powers that be helped him hone his combat abilities. One thing he learned was "put your adversaries in the wrong. And keep him there." When his house was at risk of being sold at auction to pay off old debts, Adams took out ads warning the new sheriff to keep his mitts off it. Like Benjamin Franklin, though, Adams knew how to communicate his opinions with delicacy. "As he mingled at the taverns, the lodges and the volunteer fire companies, he asked shopkeepers and shipworkers their opnions and seemed to take their answers seriously," writes A.J. Langguth in his study of the American Revolution

The injudicious management of his private affairs, already alluded to, rendered Mr. Adams poor. When this was known in England, the partisans of the ministry proposed to bribe him, by the gift of some lucrative office. A suggestion of this kind was accordingly made to Governor Hutchinson, to which he replied in a manner highly complimentary to the integrity of Mr. Adams." Such is the obstinacy and inflexible disposition of the man, that he never can be conciliated by any office or gift whatever." The offer, however, it is reported, was actually made to Mr. Adams, but neither the allurements of fortune or power could for a moment tempt Him to abandon the cause of truth, or to hazard the liberties of the people.
He was indeed poor; but he could be tempted neither by British gold, nor by the honours or profits of any office within the gift of the royal governor. Such patriotism has not been common in the world; but in America it was to be found in many a bosom, during the revolutionary struggle. The knowledge of facts like this, greatly diminishes the wonder, which has sometimes been expressed, that America should have successfully contended with Great Britain. Her physical strength was comparatively weak; but the moral courage of her statesmen, and her soldiers, was to her instead of numbers, of wealth, and fortifications.
