Driven from every other corner of the earth, freedom of thought and the right of private judgment in matters of conscience direct their course to this in happy country as their last asylum. Mankind are governed more by their feelings than by reason. We cannot make events. Our business is wisely to improve them. ADAMS, SAMUEL The intense excitement which followed the "Boston Massacre" Adams skilfully used to secure the removal of the soldiers from the town to a fort in the harbour. He it was, also, who managed the proceedings of the "Boston Tea Party," and later he was moderator of the convention of Massachusetts towns called to protest against the Boston Port Bill. One of the objects of the expedition sent by Governor Thomas Gage to Lexington (q.v.) and Concord on April 18-19, I77S> was the capture of Adams and John Hancock, temporarily staying in Lexington, and when Gage issued his proclamation of pardon on June 12 he excepted these two, whose offences, he said, were "of too flagitious a Nature to admit of any other Consideration than that of condign Punishment." Samuel Adams' father, Old Samuel Adams, was a deacon in the Old South Church in Boston. Deacon Adams also served as justice of the peace, selectman and a Boston representative to the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Samuel was born in Boston on September 27, 1722. He graduated from Harvard in 1740. Though he began to study law, he soon gave it up. After securing a loan of 1,000 pounds from his father, Adams loaned half of that and lost the other half in an attempt to start his own business. He then joined his father in the family brewery. In 1748, Samuel Adams' father died and his mother died not long after. He then inherited a sizeable estate which included a home on Purchase Street and the family brewery. Within ten years, he had spent most of it and creditors even attempted to seize his home. From 1756 to 1764, Adams worked as a tax collector, but accrued over 8,000 pounds in uncollected taxes. In 1764, Adams drafted instructions for Boston legislative representatives. In 1765, he again drafted instructions. On September 27, 1765, Adams was elected to the vacancy that Oxenbridge Thatcher had left. He was reelected in 1766 and would continuously serve until 1774.

Education: Harvard
Occupation: lawyer, businessman
Political Affiliation:
Religious Affiliation: Congregationalist
Summary of Religious Views:
Samuel Adams was devoted to public worship, as the following anecdote illustrates: When Congress was meeting in York, Pennsylvania, Adams would attend services conducted in German when no alternative services were available, even though he didn't speak German.
Quotations: "As neither reason requires nor religion permits the contrary, every man living in or out of a state of civil society has a right peaceably and quietly to worship God according to the dictates of his conscience." The Rights of the Colonists , 20 November 1772 "In regard to religion, mutual toleration in the different professions thereof is what all good and candid minds in all ages have ever practised, and, both by precept and example, inculcated on mankind. And it is now generally agreed among Christians that this spirit of toleration, in the fullest extent consistent with the being of civil society, is the chief characteristical mark of the Church. Insomuch that Mr. Locke has asserted and proved, beyond the possibility of contradiction on any solid ground, that such toleration ought to be extended to all whose doctrines are not subversive of society. The only sects which he thinks ought to be, and which by all wise laws are excluded from such toleration, are those who teach doctrines subversive of the civil government under which they live."
