ADAMS, JOHN QUINCY
, sixth president of the United States, diplomat, congressman, U.S. senator, and secretary of state. As the eldest and most gifted son of John Adams, second president of the United States, Adams enjoyed many opportunities that prepared him for later public service. In 1802 Adams was elected a U.S. senator from Massachusetts as a Federalist, but he was too independent of mind to follow a regular party line. During the international tensions that arose from the Napoleonic Wars, he supported the policies of the Jefferson administration. His stand, contrary to the position of his party, resulted in his replacement as senator. He resigned, however, before the end of his term, only to be appointed to a series of important diplomatic posts. He was one of the American commissioners who arranged for the Treaty of Ghent that ended the War of 1812. As secretary of state, he drafted the Monroe Doctrine and acquired Florida from Spain for the United States. He was the New England candidate for the presidency in 1824, but neither he nor any of the other candidates commanded the electoral majority the Constitution required. Therefore the election was decided by the House of Representatives, each state casting one vote. Henry Clay threw his support to Adams, who was then elected over Andrew Jackson. When Adams made Clay his secretary of state, the disapproving Jacksonians accused the president of entering into "a corrupt bargain" with Clay. From then until the end of his administration, Adams was the target of highly charged partisan abuse.

, sixth president of the United States . Born to John Adams and Abigail Adams in Braintree, Massachusetts, Adams was immersed in politics at an early age. As a teenager, he traveled in Europe with his diplomat father and attended European schools. After graduating from Harvard, he served as minister to the Netherlands, Prussia, Russia, and Great Britain. He was chosen by the Federalists to fill a vacant U.S. Senate seat, but his failure to vote consistently along party lines and his opposition to the Embargo Act resulted in his replacement. Adams was one of the American commissioners who negotiated the Treaty of Ghent with the British, ending the War of 1812. As secretary of state under James Monroe , Adams made an agreement with Great Britain for joint occupation of the Oregon Territory, negotiated the Adams-Onís Treaty , resulting in the acquisition of Florida from Spain, and helped develop the Monroe Doctrine In 1824 Adams became the only son of a president to be elected president himself. His administration was marked by controversy from the beginning. The

Library of Congress John Quincy Adams was the sixth President of the United States (1825-1829) and lifetime diarist. His father, John Adams , helped draft the Declaration of Independence and was the second President of the United States (1797-1801). John Quincy was born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts in 1767. His early education, in mathematics, languages, and the classics, was by way of his father. He graduated from Harvard College in 1787 and studied law in Newburyport, Massachusetts under the tutelage of Theophilus Parsons . In 1790 he began the practice of law in Boston. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1802, served in various diplomatic posts and was President James Monroe's Secretary of State (1817-1825), in the opinion of many, one of the best to ever serve in that post. Adams was an abolitionist and opposed slavery in the newly admitted states. After completing his Presidency, Adams served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1831 until his death in 1848. John Quincy Adams

John Quincy Adams (1767-1848), was the first son of a president of the United States who also became President. Like his father, John Adams, he failed to win a second term. But soon afterward, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. This pleased him more, he said, than his election as president.
Before entering the presidency, Adams held several important diplomatic posts. He took part in the negotiations that ended the War of 1812. As secretary of state, he helped develop the Monroe Doctrine. Quarrels within his party hampered Adams as president, and he made little progress with his ambitious legislative program. His years in the White House were perhaps the unhappiest period of Adams' life.
Adams was short and stout, and his shrill voice often broke when he became excited. Yet he spoke so well that he was nicknamed "Old Man Eloquent." Adams was affectionate with close friends, but more reserved toward others. He once referred to himself as "an unsocial savage."
During Adams' Administration, Noah Webster brought out his two-volume American Dictionary of the English Language, and James Fenimore Cooper published his famous novel The Last of the Mohicans. The American labor movement began in Philadelphia.

One of the most eloquent and intelligent men ever to grace our nation. He was proud of being the son of John Adams, second president of the United States as well as Abigail Adams. Should be remembered for one who knew the difference between right and wrong, and fought for those beliefs. Inaugural address John Q Adams 1767 - 1848 John Quincy Adams, (1767-1848), ad'[sch ]mz, 6th President of the United States. He was the son of John Adams , 2nd president. Independence and Union were the watchwords of his career; a Union of the United States of North America to grow by the destiny of Providence and nature to become a continental republic of free men stretching from ocean to ocean and from Gulf to Arctic.
"The Second Adams" was the only son of a president to become president; in fact, his parents actually trained him for highest office. His mother told the boy that some day the state would rest upon his shoulder. As he grew up with the new nation, he had during his long lifetime two notable careers, separated by a strange interlude. The first career was as an American diplomat who rose to become secretary of state. The second career was as a member of the House of Representatives and opponent of slavery. The strange interlude was as president of the United States; for four years the state did indeed rest, uneasily, upon his shoulder. Never publicly popular, often reviled by his political enemies, he nevertheless ended his life in the sunshine of national esteem.
