He wrote a good biography of Albert Gallatin (1879), a less satisfactory one of John Randolph (1882), and two novels (the first anonymously and the second under a pseudonym) : Democracy (1880), a cutting satire on politics, and Esther (1884). His exhaustive study of the administrations of Jefferson and Madison, History of the United States of America Never of a sanguine temperament, Adams became even more pessimistic after the suicide (1885) of his adored wife. He abandoned American history and began a series of restless journeys, physical and mental, in an effort to achieve a basic philosophy of history. Book Description Customer Reviews As the grandson of America's sixth president, John Quincy Adams, and great grandson of America's second president, John Adams, Henry Adams was born to a distinguished New England heritage. His biography recounts the education he received, lamenting the inadequacy of formal schooling in preparing him to live ably during a century of revolutionary technological and philosophical change. Within his comments are wry insights that sometimes draw a smile from the reader, such as his definition of a schoolmaster: "A man employed to tell lies to little boys." Adams' views are rather cynical and somewhat fatalistic, but they do reflect the grand changes taking place during his lifetime. I read this book for a lit. class in college, and though most of my classmates found this book a little dull, I found it interesting enough to hold my attention. I picked up this book at the suggestion of an Amazon reader who thought it would complement "The Norman Podhoretz Reader." It does. In some ways this ranks with Ellery Sedgwick's marvelous "In Praise of Gentlemen" but I think it far too democratic for a time where standards are falling. In any event, Adams was a deeply patrician, highly elite member of the best early American society. Breeding tells and thank God for the old WASP America. It is disappearing far too fast.

roulette or rouge et noir , the whole nation flung itself into the Stock Exchange, until the "outsiders", as they were called, in opposition to the regular brokers of Broad Street, represented nothing less than the entire population of the American Republic. Everyone speculated, and for a time, everyone speculated successfully. The inevitable reaction began when the government, about a year after the close of the war, stopped its Issues and ceased borrowing. The greenback currency had for a moment sunk to a value of only 37 cents to the dollar. It is even asserted that on the worst day of all, the 11th of July, 1864 ; one sale of $100,000 in gold was actually made at 310, which is equivalent to about 33 cents in the dollar. At thIs point, however, the depreciation stopped, and the paper which had come so near falling into entire discredit steadily rose in value, first to 50 cents, then to 60 and to 70, and within the year to more than 90 cents. An intrigue equally successful and disreputable brought these two men into the Erie board of directors, whence they speedily drove their more timid predecessor Drew. In July, 1868, Gould made himself president and treasurer of the corporation. Fisk became comptroller. A young lawyer named Lane became counsel. These three directors made a majority of the executive committee, and were masters of Erie. The board of directors held no meetings. The executive committee was never called together, and the three men Fisk, Gould, and Lane became from this time the absolute, irresponsible owners of the Erie Railway, not less than if it had been their personal property and plaything.
