Er arbeitete v. a. Er selbst strebte nach einer Welt, ”[...] a world that sensitive and timid natures could regard without shudder”.

The Education of Henry Adams Henry Adams Written in the third person, Adams contemplates his privileged background mirrored in the realities of the burgeoning twentieth century. Choosing not to follow in the footsteps of his influential family, which included presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, Henry dedicated his life to observation, education, and writing.

Adams, Henry Adams, Henry, North American Review. In 1877 Adams moved to Washington, D.C., his home thereafter. He wrote a good biography of Albert Gallatin (1879), a less satisfactory one of John Randolph Democracy (1880), a cutting satire on politics, and Esther (1884). His exhaustive study of the administrations of Jefferson and Madison, History of the United States of America Never of a sanguine temperament, Adams became even more pessimistic after the suicide (1885) of his adored wife. He abandoned American history and began a series of restless journeys, physical and mental, in an effort to achieve a basic philosophy of history. Drawing upon the physical sciences for guidance and influenced by his brother, Brooks Adams Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres (privately printed 1904, pub. 1913), and his own era, presented in

Yesterday the greatest question was decided which ever was debated in America; and a greater perhaps never was, nor will be, decided among men. A resolution was passed without one dissenting colony, that those United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States. Letter to Mrs. Adams, July 3, 1776. John Adams The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epocha in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward for evermore.
