This World Wide Web document is a personal research project motivated by the following claim: "Truth is the object of Knowledge of whatever kind; and when we inquire what is meant by Truth, I suppose it is right to answer that Truth means facts and their relations, which stand towards each other pretty much as subjects and predicates in logic. All that exists, as contemplated by the human mind, forms one large system or complex fact, and this of course resolves itself into an indefinite number of particular facts, which, as being portions of a whole, have countless relations of every kind, one towards another." The product of an agreeably dotty cleric named Edwin Abbott Abbott and first published in 1884, Flatland distills all that the Victorian era knew of higher mathematicsand then someinto a witty, complex novel of ideas. Ian Stewart, the author of the equally witty sequel, Flatterlandwhich adds to Abbott's store of science the key discoveries made sincedoes a superb job of explaining the original book's enigmas, allusions, ironies, implausibilities, and what Douglas Hofstadter would call "metamagical themas." Among other things, Stewart comments on Abbott's comments on such things as the nature/nurture controversy, the fourth dimension and beyond, the role of multidimensional spaces in economic systems, infinite series and perfect squares, celestial mechanics, and other matters close to the hearts of cosmologists and science buffs alike. Stewart's notes make an entertaining and learned addition to an already classic bit of writingone that has never been out of print since its first publication. For both devoted Abbott fans and newcomers to his work, this is the edition to have. Gregory McNamee

Unless you're a mathematician, the chances of you reading any novels about geometry are probably slender. But if you read only two in your life, these are the ones. Taken together, they form a couple of accessible and charming explanations of geometry and physics for the curious non-mathematician. Flatland , which is also available under separate cover, was published in 1880 and imagines a two-dimensional world inhabited by sentient geometric shapes who think their planar world is all there is. But one Flatlander, a Square, discovers the existence of a third dimension and the limits of his world's assumptions about reality and comes to understand the confusing problem of higher dimensions. The book is also quite a funny satire on society and class distinctions of Victorian England. The further mathematical fantasy, Sphereland , published 60 years later, revisits the world of Flatland in time to explore the mind-bending theories created by Albert Einstein, whose work so completely altered the scientific understanding of space, time, and matter. Among Einstein's many challenges to common sense were the ideas of curved space, an expanding universe and the fact that light does not travel in a straight line. Without use of the mathematical formulae that bar most non-scientists from an understanding of Einstein's theories

A ROMANCE OF MANY DIMENSIONS.

New and Revised Edition
pp. xvi, 102. Square 8vo. 22 cm. Uncut. Original limp card boards, covered in printed vellumized paper. An usually well preserved copy, of a notoriously fragile book. Published in the same year as the first edition. Edwin A. Abbott (1838-1926) was born in London, the son of the Headmaster of the Philological School, Marylebone. After a successful career at St. John's College, Cambridge, he married and became a minister. In 1864 he was elected Head Master of the City of London School, and served brilliantly for twenty-five years. It was due to his influence, that the study of great English Literature became an integral part of educational programs. He was one of the greatest teachers of his era. He became well known as a Bacon scholar, and occasionally became embroiled in the Shakespeare-Bacon controversy. It is interesting to note that the fine article on Abbott in the DNB does not even mention 'Flatland' - perhaps because it was both pseudonymous and most unusual, and thus somewhat inconvenient to associate with its author.
Not incidentally, 'Flatland' is also full of humorous satires on class, bureaucracy, and society in Victorian England. In recent years, Abbott's witty view of class conflict and women's roles in society have gotten much attention - especially interesting are his descriptions of women's language versus men's language.

About this Electronic Edition and its Authenticity
This electronic version of Flatland is transcribed from the second edition (1884) of the original text. It appears that this is the most common (or perhaps the only) edition found on the internet. I may make corrections from time to time if I discover errors in this version. If so, such corrections will be based on my sixth edition (1952) paperback copy.
