We prepare students for careers in academia, medicine, veterinary medicine, wildlife and fisheries conservation and environmental education, and related fields. We conduct field and laboratory research into various areas of zoology, with particular emphases on ecology and conservation. In addition, we provide crucial coursework and collaborative research support to other disciplines on campus, including botany, renewable natural resources, genetics, and microbiology.

What is Zoology?
The science of zoology - the study of animals - includes research into evolution, ecology, genetics, behaviour, development and physiology. Zoology has undergone dramatic changes in the past twenty years, and will become one of the most important sciences of the twenty first century. The current resurgence in zoological research is underpinned by advances in technology and methodology, whilst the importance of zoology has grown in urgency as local and global ecosystems are altered by human activities. The application of molecular biology has been a major technological advance, and has enabled long-standing questions to be revisited with greater powers of resolution, particularly in the fields of embryonic development, ecology, population biology, physiology and evolutionary biology.
Similarly, the emergence of powerful analytical instruments and advances in microscopy have opened new avenues for research, whilst the remarkable growth in computing technology has facilitated analysis of complex systems. On the methodological side, the realisation that all comparative biology must take place within a strict evolutionary framework has added rigour to the science, whilst objective methods for phylogeny reconstruction have finally put this elusive framework within reach.

Home Staff Student Help Courses ... Links Amalgamation of the former departments of Zoology and Entomology, which had functioned independently for over 50 years, took place in 1994. The Department of Zoology and Entomology has developed into a dynamic department with research programmes which include systematics and evolution, conservation biology, population and community ecology, physiological and behavioural ecology, and pest management.
There is an appropriate focus on the biodiversity and conservation of the southern African fauna. The Department incorporates the long-established Mammal Research Institute, with an international reputation for its research on African mammals, the Centre for Environmental Studies, which trains graduates with an inter-disciplinary approach to environmental studies and conservation planning, and the Conservation Ecology Research Unit.

The University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada The Department of Biology offers programs leading to Honours B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees. A wide range of research activities are pursued by our approximately 40 full-time faculty and approximately 100 graduate students, supported by 35 administrative and technical staff. Areas of research include ecology, evolution, systematics, physiology, biochemistry, cell and developmental biology, and molecular biology and genetics. Are you looking for Plant Sciences or Zoology ? On 1 July, 2002 these two departments merged to form the Department of Biology, one of the largest departments at UWO. This fledgling web site combines all of the information from the two former departments, and much more. It is still developing so check back regularly. Please update your bookmarks. This site provides access to data and images in the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology collections. Data are refreshed weekly. We are constantly updating taxonomy and checking specimen identifications and associated information, but outdated names, mistaken identifications, and erroneous localities inevitably occur. We urge investigators to verify all data by direct examination of the specimens, and we appreciate notification of discrepancies. MVZ data records may be used by individual researchers or research groups, but they may not be repackaged, resold, or redistributed in any form without the express written consent of a curatorial staff member of the MVZ. If any of these records are used in an analysis or report, the provenance of the original data must be acknowledged and the MVZ notified. The Museum of Vertebrate Zoology or its staff is not responsible for damages, injury or loss due to the use of these data. Questions and comments about this site should be sent to
