Nomenclatural Glossary for Zoology
This glossary is based on a text intended to aid indexers in the production of nomenclatural entries for the Zoological Record , the index to world zoological literature published by BIOSIS and the Zoological Society of London. It covers terminology commonly encountered within publications dealing with the systematics and nomenclature of animals. This version of the glossary has recently been extended to include additional terms listed in the glossary of the new Fourth Edition of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature published in September 1999, and Article numbers given within definitions refer to this Code. The Museum of Comparative Zoology was founded in 1859, through the efforts of Louis Agassiz (1807-1873). Agassiz, a zoologist from Neuchatel, Switzerland, served as the Director of the Museum from 1859 until his death in 1873. A brilliant lecturer and scholar, he established the Museum and its collections as a center for research and education.
Agassiz strove to illuminate the variety and comparative relationships of animal life. The Museum's twelve departments - Biological Oceanography, Entomology, Herpetology, Ichthyology, Invertebrate Paleontology, Invertebrate Zoology, Mammalogy, Marine Biology, Mollusks, Ornithology, Population Genetics, and Vertebrate Paleontology - continue with Agassiz' vision and also lead modern zoological research. The Ernst Mayr Library and its archives join in supporting the work of the Museum.

http://www.mip.berkeley.edu/mvz/
Founded in 1908 by a gift to the University of California from Miss Annie Montague Alexander, the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology is a center for research on, conservation of, and education in terrestrial vertebrates. Our collections of amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals are among the largest in the United States and our University setting has made the Museum one of the premier centers for the education of undergraduate and graduate students in vertebrate biology. Under the successive leadership of eminent naturalists and evolutionary biologists, starting with Joseph Grinnell, the Museum’s program has focused continually on evolutionary biology from the perspective of ecology, behavior, morphology, population biology, and genetics. Because the Museum was founded with the philosophy that organisms should be studied in relationship to their natural environments, the specimen collections are supplemented by extensive field notes, maps, photographs, and correspondence which enhances their value to researchers. The Museum’s collections thus grew as a direct, material manifestation of the activities of its students and staff, academic and nonacademic. Field activities of those associated with the Museum over the decades have extended to the far-flung corners of the globe, but have primarily centered in western North America, Mexico and Central America, western South America, central Asia, and east Africa. The collections reflect this geographic scale.

Welcome to the Department of Zoology at Michigan State University. Zoology is the branch of natural science that deals with the integrative study of animal biology. It is concerned with every level of biological organization from the gene to the biosphere, and with the structure, physiology, behavior, genetics, development, distribution, ecology and evolution of animals in all taxonomic groups. Research and course work within the department cover an enormous array of organisms, as well as diverse investigative techniques. Students in the department obtain a broad education in biology while also specializing in the particular aspects of zoology that interest them most. Training in zoology can help students to prepare for a wide variety of careers including biomedical research, medicine, dentistry, biotechnology, veterinary science, marine biology, wildlife conservation, environmental science, work in zoological parks and aquaria, behavioral biology, and teaching. We invite you to explore this website to find out more about the programs offered through the Department of Zoology. If you would like more information, simply contact the department:

Specimen and archival collections of the Museum of Vertebrate zoology, University of California, Berkeley. The MVZ collections
    http://www.mip.berkeley.edu/mvz/collections/
T he MVZ collections form the core of the Museum’s research, conservation, and education programs. The collections, which number approximately 630,000 specimens, constitute a unique and permanent record of the past and present distributions of many terrestrial vertebrate species. Taxonomic and geographic representation of specimens reflects current and past research interests of the Museum’s faculty, staff, and students. The historic emphasis on collecting series of specimens that serve as the bases for studies in evolution, morphology, behavior, ecology, and population genetics continues to the present. T he Museum also houses a collection of over 40,000 tissue samples for use in molecular analyses. The majority of these were taken in conjunction with voucher specimens which can be referred to for verification of results. C omplementing these collections is an extensive archive of photographs, correspondence, and field notebooks that date to the Museum’s founding in 1908. These materials contain information about specimens and changing environmental conditions, primarily in California and the western United States, that is not recorded on specimen labels or catalog cards. Click here for MVZ collection policies and documents.

T he University of Michigan Museum of Zoology Bird Division is a collection of resources for people who conduct research on or need information about birds. The two Division curators and various graduate students conduct research on the phylogenetic relationships, evolution and behavior of a wide variety of birds using museum collections, molecular techniques, and captive and field studies. We actively maintain a collection of about 200,000 preserved specimens available for study by systematists and other scientists. We have a sound laboratory for analysis of bird vocalizations. Since 1930 the Bird Division has been the headquarters and provided space for the library of the Wilson Ornithological Society, an international organization devoted to the study of birds. The Division houses the books and periodicals on birds that are part of theUniversity library system, as well as the collection owned by the Wilson Ornithological Society. Together these extensive collections form one of the largest ornithological libraries in North America. For over 80 years the Bird Division has been a major center for ornithological research and graduate studies.
