Algorithms, Logic, and Complexity
The goal of pragmatic computer science is to develop systems that fully exploit the capabilities of current computer technology. The goal of theoretical computer science is to understand the underlying principles of information processing, principles that are invariant with respect to technological change. Some of the areas we are investigating are described below. Analysis of Algorithms An algorithm with exponential asymptotic running time is of limited practical value regardless of future advances in hardware technology. Members of the faculty are searching for efficient, practical algorithms to solve problems in coding, scheduling, logic, computational geometry, information retrieval, and programming-language optimization. We are also studying the approximation properties of NP optimization problems and developing methods for establishing both positive and negative approximation results for such problems. Parallel Computation Recent advances in VLSI have made it possible to use multiple processors to tackle a single problem. Efficient algorithms for a parallel system have characteristics far different from traditional sequential algorithms. Furthermore, some problems appear to be inherently sequential, in the sense that no parallel algorithm can significantly reduce the computation time needed to solve them. Our research has concentrated on distinguishing inherently sequential problems from those that can be solved quickly with parallel algorithms and on designing efficient parallel algorithms, particularly for scheduling and graph problems.

Description
An interdisciplinary journal, Theoretical Population Biology presents articles on the theoretical aspects of the biology of populations, particularly in the areas of ecology, genetics, demography, and epidemiology. Primary emphasis is on development of theory, but the journal also presents experimental results directly impinging on theoretical descriptions of populations and the dynamics of populations.

2002: 19/30 (Evolutionary Biology)
Impact Factor:
Aims and Scope
The Biological Journal of the Linnean Society publishes papers concerned with the process of organic evolution in the broadest sense. It particularly welcomes contributions that illustrate some of the unifying concepts of evolutionary biology with evidence, either observational or theoretical, from the fields of genetics, systematics, biogeography, or ecology. The Biological Journal succeeded (in 1969) the Proceedings of the Society, the journal in which Darwin and Wallace published their seminal papers in 1858. Also published on behalf of the Linnean Society: Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society and Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society

The activities of the Laboratory Experimental and Computational Biology (LECB) fall into several broad areas: macromolecular structure and function; membrane structure and function; immunology; phamacokinetics and computational and modeling methodology. The work is both theoretical and experimental. Application of theoretical understanding to these biological systems is accomplished through the use of advanced computing. Many of the theoretical studies are possible only through use of the supercomputing facilities at the Advanced Biomedical Computing Center, FCRDC, which was created and sponsored through the initiative of the Laboratory of Experimental and Computational Biology. The Laboratory oversees the development and operation of the contractor-operated The ABCC which serves as the only public-domain supercomputing center dedicated to biomedical research in the world. Access is provided to suitable applicants from the biomedical community, on the basic of scientific priority as evaluated by a time allocation group made up of representatives from the NCI, other NIH Institutes, and the extramural community. The goal is to provide access for challenging computational biology problems to proven, easy-to-use, fast, reliable, efficient, high-performance computers. The computing environment is centered around MIMD supercomputers and scalar parallel machines. A fiber optic network interconnects these platforms, and provides Internet access and high speed connections to a userbase of more than 1600 researchers.
