What is Theoretical Biology?
The aim of theoretical biology is to unveil general principles in the vast multitude of biological phenomena. Theoretical biology is the original and comprehensive term, but other names such as systems biology, integrative biology, and bioinformatics are also used, in particular to highlight special applications. Theoretical biology is inherently interdisciplinary and linked to many related fields, e.g., artificial life, complex adaptive systems, mathematical modelling, kybernetics, informatics, to name a few. more ...

History [of theoretical biology]. The first steps towards a theory of biological form were already taken in Greek times with attempts - notably by Aristotle - to classify biological organisms and to understand their growth. By the 1600s extensive classification had been done, and many structural features had been identified as in common between different organisms. But despite hopes on the part of René Descartes Galileo and others that biological processes might follow the same kind of rigid clockwork rules that were beginning to emerge in physics, no general principles were forthcoming. Rough analogies between the forms and functions of biological and non-biological systems were fairly common among both artists and scientists, but were rarely thought to have much scientific significance. In the 1800s more detailed analogies began to emerge, sometimes as offshoots of the field of morphology named by Johann Goethe , and sometimes with mathematical interpretations, and in 1917 D’Arcy Thompson published the first edition of his book On Growth and Form which used mathematical methods - mostly from analytical geometry - to discuss a variety of biological processes, usually in analogy with ones in physics. But emphasis on evolutionary rather than mechanistic explanations for a long time caused little further work to be done along these lines. Much additional data was obtained, particularly in embryology, and by the 1930s it seemed fairly clear that at least some aspects of growth in the embryo were controlled by chemical messengers. In 1951

The Theoretical Biology group develops theory in two major research areas: evolutionary ecology and self-organization. Current research projects focus on evolutionary game theory, life history theory, evolutionary immunology, kin selection, sex determination, sex allocation, sexual selection, sexual conflict, metapopulation genetics, sympatric speciation, allometric scaling laws, resource and interference competition, host-parasite co-evolution, and the emergence of social structure. Most of these projects are based on a general theoretical question but also closely related to a specific empirical problem in the 'real world'. We try to develop mechanistic models whose predictions can be tested in the lab or in the field. To this end, we closely collaborate with empirical biologists from various departments.

    Description
The Journal of Theoretical Biology is the leading forum for theoretical papers that give insight into biological processes. It covers a very wide range of topics and is of interest to biologists in many areas of research. Many of the papers make use of mathematics, and an effort is made to make the papers intelligible to biologists as a whole. Experimental material bearing ontheory is acceptable. Comment on theoretical issues or on papers published in the journal is welcomed in the form of Letters to the Editors. The Journal of Theoretical Biology now operates receiving offices in San Diego and London ensuring faster publication times for papers.
