Contents of This Chapter
C1 Bloom's Taxonomy
Following the 1948 Convention of the American Psychological Association, B S Bloom took a lead in formulating a classification of "the goals of the educational process". Three "domains" of educational activities were identified. The first of these, named the Cognitive Domain, involves knowledge and the development of intellectual attitudes and skills. (The other domains are the Affective Domain and the Psychomotor Domain, and need not concern us here). Eventually, Bloom and his co-workers established a hierarchy of educational objectives, which is generally referred to as Bloom's Taxonomy , and which attempts to divide cognitive objectives into subdivisions ranging from the simplest behaviour to the most complex. It is important to realise that the divisions outlined above are not absolutes and that other systems or hierarchies have been devised. However, Bloom's taxonomy is easily understood and widely applied.

Abstract
The advent of software agents gave rise to much discussion of just what such an agent is, and of how they differ from programs in general. Here we propose a formal definition of an autonomous agent which clearly distinguishes a software agent from just any program. We also offer the beginnings of a natural kinds taxonomy of autonomous agents, and discuss possibilities for further classification . Finally, we discuss subagents and multiagent systems

Canadian Classification
The Canadian Classification (Taxonomy) organizes soils first into Orders, then Great Groups, then Sub-Groups, then Families and finally Series or Associations.
Soil Order The highest or broadest level of classification is the Order reflecting which of the soil forming factors had the most influence of soil formation. Nine orders are recognized with specific horizon characteristics. Within Saskatchewan most of the soil orders are represented, although the main agricultural area is dominated by soils of the Chernozemic Order. The northern agricultural/forest transition areas are mainly Luvisolic soils and boreal forest soils are dominated by Brunisolic soils. To the far north, the subsoil rarely thaws so that we have permafrost giving rise to Crysolic soils. Wherever there is standing water and restricted drainage, Organic soils form, usually in the wetter forested regions. Gleysolic soils develop in areas that are subjected to periodic waterlogging. Parent material that contains a high proportion of soluble salts give rise to Solonetzic soils.

THE TAXONOMY OF EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
This is a revised version of Benjamin Bloom's work with the addition of the Psychomotor Domain as developed by Anita Harrow [1972]. Dr. Bloom's intent was to develop a classification framework for writing educational objectives. The questions and examples were added by Tom Allen to make the Taxonomy more useful for beginning teachers as a tool to facilitate appropriate questioning.
COGNITIVE DOMAIN:
  • Knowledge: recognize or recall information. Q: What is the capital of Maine? Who wrote "Hamlet?" Words typically used: define, recall, recognize, remember, who, what, where, when.
  • Comprehension: demonstrate that the student has sufficient understanding to organize and arrange material mentally. Q: What do you think Hamlet meant when he said, "to be or not to be, that is the question?" (Rosenshine, among others, would argue that one of the best ways to teach is to teach pupils how to ask their own questions about the topic under consideration.) Words typically used: describe, compare, contrast, rephrase, put in your own words, explain the main idea.

    Format for a Report on Implementation of Programme of Work for the Global Taxonomy Initiative ( PDF Word Governments, through the Convention on Biological Diversity, have acknowledged the existence of a "taxonomic impediment" to the sound management of biodiversity. The purpose of the Global Taxonomic Initiative (GTI) is to remove or reduce this taxonomic impediment - in other words, the knowledge gaps in our taxonomic system (including those associated with genetic systems), the shortage of trained taxonomists and curators, and the impact these deficiencies have on our ability to conserve, use and share the benefits of our biological diversity. The GTI has been established by the Conference of the Parties to address the lack of taxonomic information and expertise available in many parts of the world, and thereby to improve decision-making in conservation, sustainable use and equitable sharing of the benefits derived from genetic resources. The GTI is specifically intended to support implementation of the work programmes of the Convention on thematic and cross cutting issues. Given the many competing demands for capacity building in taxonomy, activities under the GTI must be clearly linked to the implementation of Convention.

The pufferfish genus Fugu Abe, 1952, a junior subjective synonym of Takifugu Abe, 1949. Bull. Natn. Sci. Mus., Tokyo, Ser. A. 18(1):15-20. Takifugu includes the species Takifugu rubripes (formerly Fugu rubripes), which is a well known model organism for the vertebrate genome. Any sequence from Takifugu rubripes can still be retrieved by searching on 'Fugu rubripes', because Fugu rubripes is included in the database as a synonym of Takifugu rubripes.

    The Scheel Letters edited by Allan Semeit These letters were sent out by Joergen Scheel, from Denmark, in the early 1960's. Copies were circulated among hobbyists around the world. This period of time was when killifish keepers began organizing and corresponding with one another. These communications led to the discovery of basic techniques to maintain killifish and helped resolve some of the confusion regarding species identification that existed at that time. Many popular species had been misidentified and were circulating under names belonging to other species. Bear this in mind as you read through these.
    The "Letters" are being posted in the sequence we received them. We believe this is in chronological order. The "Letters" were not clearly divided, so we have numbered and divided the information into separate sections as the topic changes. These numbers do not reflect any numbers attached to the original Letters. We have also taken the liberty to correct minor grammatical errors, possibly created when the text changed from one format to another. The intent, however, was to leave as much possible as it was received. We hope that you enjoy these Letters and find them to be educational and helpful.
