Physiology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Physiology is the study of the mechanical, physical, and biochemical functions of living organisms. Physiology has classically been divided into plant physiology and animal physiology The field of animal physiology extends the tools and methods of human physiology to non-human animal species . Plant physiology also borrows techniques from both fields. Its scope of subjects is at least as diverse as the tree of life itself. Due to this diversity of subjects, research in animal physiology tends to concentrate on understanding how physiological traits changed throughout the evolutionary history of animals. Other major branches of scientific study that have grown out of physiology research include biochemistry biophysics biomechanics , and pharmacology Table of contents 1 History 2 Areas of physiology 3 Topics 4 See also ... edit

Physiology or Medicine is one of the five prize areas mentioned in Alfred Nobel's will. The will was, however, partly incomplete. Nobel simply stated that prizes be given to those who, during the preceding year, "shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind" and that one part be given to the person who "shall have made the most important discovery within the domain of physiology or medicine." Historical Introduction (... or 'why do we need to know this?')
The anatomy of the connections between eye and brain has been known since the turn of the century. However, knowledge of circuit diagrams alone is not enough to infer neural function. Before recordings of activity in individual cells became available in the 1950's, theories of perception were inspired by anatomy. The brain was known to contain huge numbers of cells, massively interconnected (but only over short distances) in circuits that are similar over the whole cortex. Studies of localised brain damage (eg. following gunshot wounds) also showed that the visual cortex was mapped topographically. These facts inspired the Electrical Field Theory of perception.
Visual patterns were thought to set up corresponding fields of electrical activity across the surface of the cortex (see the picture above). Perceptual organisation in complex displays was said to be governed by interactions between these current fields. Experimental tests of the theory included attempts to short-circuit the electrical fields by pinning metallic strips across the surface of the cortex in rhesus monkeys, and then performing tests of visual functioning (eg. Lashley et al.

Abductors
- muscle taking a limb or the jaw away from the body.
Acetyl choline - A neurotransmitter substance found at all cholinergic synapses including those of motoneurones at the neuromuscular junction.
Acini - the secreting units of a gland. Each acinus is a sack-like structure, lined by secreting cells. The sack opens out into a tubule.
Acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis -abbreviated to ANUG- a painful and destructive infection of the gingiva caused by a shift in the normal balance of bacteria in the gingival sulcus, in which fusobacteria and spirochaetes become dominant.
Adapt - to modify in response to change. When used in regard to evolution, it means that some structure or behaviour of an organism may over time, appear to change in response toa new threat or opportunity in the environment. The bacterium which causes tuberculosis has developed certain strains which have adapted to the antibiotics used to treat the disease which is now becoming more difficult to treat.
Adductors - muscle bringing a limb or the jaw towards the body.

Updated June 22, 2000
The University at Stony Brook Biophysics Faculty is an interdisciplinary group of scientists from the university departments of Anesthesiology Biochemistry and Cell Biology Chemistry Medicine ... Neurobiology and Behavior , Neurological Surgery, Orthopaedics Pharmacological Sciences Physics and Astronomy and Physiology and Biophysics . Several staff scientists from Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory are also members of the Biophysics Faculty. The basis of the teaching program is the faculty's interest in understanding the molecular structure and function of biological molecules. Research in Biophysics at Stony Brook places particular emphasis on structural biophysics and membrane biophysics. In structural biophysics, we seek to relate the molecular structure of biomolecules (especially proteins) to the function of the molecule. In membrane biophysics, we study the lipids and proteins of cell membranes using electrical and chemical techniques. Although the major focus is basic science research, several projects relate to clinical science, with faculty investigating such diseases as diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's disease and Lyme disease. Also, some of our faculty members are developing new tools for use in medical diagnosis.
