What is ISHAM?
ISHAM is a world wide organisation that represents all scientists and doctors with a special interest in fungal diseases. ISHAM is an independant society that is non-political and non-discriminatory. It exists solely to encourage and facilitate the study and practice of all aspects of medical and veterinary mycology. ISHAM was founded in 1954 at the VII International Congress of Botany with 150 members and has subsequently expanded to become an international body representing more than 1000 individuals who work professionally with fungal diseases and pathogenic fungi. Twenty three national medical mycology associations are affiliated with ISHAM . The society is a properly recognised non-governmental affiliate of the World Health Organisation. It sustains a co-operative working relationship with the International Mycological Association and the Mycology Division of the International Union of Microbiological Societies. The aims of the organisation are:
  • To encourage the practice and study of all aspects of medical and veterinary mycology To facilitate on an international basis the exchange of ideas and information and give assistance pertaining to medical and veterinary mycology To publish an official journal: Medical Mycology (formerly the Journal of Medical and Veterinary Mycology) To organize an international congress at least once every five years

General Concepts
Fungi are eukaryotic microorganisms which are heterotrophic and essentially aerobic with limited anaerobic capabilities. Fungi synthesize lysine by the L-aadipic acid biosynthetic pathway. They possess chitinous cell walls, plasma membranes containing ergosterol, 80SrRNA and microtubules composed of tubulin. Fungi grow as yeasts, molds or a combination of both (i.e. dimorphism).
Clinical Presentation
Fungal infections can present clinically in three general manners. Cutaneous presentations can include dermatophyte infections as well as more superficial manifestations seen in pityriasis versicolor. Subcutaneous infections, such as sporotrichosis, often result from traumatic inoculation of the responsible organism into the skin. Systemic mycoses usually follow inhalation and are subsequent to primary pulmonary infections. Alternatively, systemic fungal infections can occur in immunocompromised hosts from normal flora. For example, Candida albicans is frequently seen as part of normal vaginal flora but can produce systemic disease in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy or in AIDS patients. In addition, fungi can indirectly produce disease by eliciting an immune response in the host.

Terms discussed: fleshy fungus (pl. fleshy fungi), Fungus (pl. Fungi), Mushroom (pl. Mushrooms), Mycology
Okay, this is really three questions...
Topics:
1) What is mycology?

2) What are fungi?

3) What is the difference between mushrooms and fungi?
1) What is Mycology

Mycology
is the study of fungi and organisms that, like fungi
  • Do not produce their own food by means of photosynthesis, and
  • Reproduce by means of spores (bottom right in the picture).
2) What are fungi?
Fungi are a kingdom of organisms which share the following characteristics:
  • Their main body is in the form of thin (one cell thick!) strands called mycelium (bottom left in the picture).
  • They cannot manufacture their own food through photosynthesis; rather, the mycelium secretes enzymes which digest part of their surroundings (a log, for example) and this is then absorbed by the mycelium
  • Their cell walls are made mostly of chitin and similar compounds, not cellulose.
