Some folks say a man is made out of mud,
But a poor man's made out of muscle and blood.
Muscle and blood,
Skin and bone,
A mind that's weak and a back that's strong.

Duke University Introduction to Systemic Histology send questions or comments to Dr. Hale at Hale0004@mc.duke.edu The purpose of this mini-course is to teach students how to identify various cell types in standard histologic sections, and to identify a variety of normal tissues. This course will be useful to any student whose research requires examination of tissue sections. Structure/function relationships will be emphasized, using an organ system approach. The scheduled class time will include lecture and demonstration of various tissue slides using a video microscope. Each student will be issued a set of glass slides for individual review, and additional "help session" time will be scheduled where students can review these slides with pathology faculty. Access to a microscope is thus required for this course. Rental microscopes are available for those students who do not have access to a microscope within their research lab. The user will see images with blue boxes which are hot spots that are hyperlinked to higher magnifications. To go back to lower powers, just click on the image outside of the blue boxes to zoom out If you cannot see the animation listed above after you have clicked on their links, click on the "Get Shockwave" button and download the FREE Shockwave Flash Plugin. An Introduction to Plant Tissues This tissue module is organized into three parts, each with a specific objective. The objective of part one is to provide an introduction to topics that relate to the structure and function of plant cells. These will help you understand why plant cells look the way they do. The objective of part two is to apply information learned in topics of part one as an aid to identify cell types and tissues these form. The objective of part three is to examine some representative slides of roots, stems, and leaves at different magnifications to see how tissues combine in different ways to form functional plant structure. Access topics by clicking on each in the module outline. click here for an overview of a page with some notes about use.
