Department of Biological Sciences
University of Delaware Mammalian Histology (B408) is taught in the fall semester annually and is one of the courses required for the Medical Scholars Program with the Jefferson Medical College. Consequently, it is taught at a comprehensive level and concentrates heavily on human tissues and organ systems. A strong component of this course is tissue structure at the ultrastructural level and how it relates to structure-functional relationships at the light microscopic level. A sizeable collection of color light microscopic images as well as black and white electron microscopic images have been archived and can be accessed by links with this home page. These images files have been produced by: Dr. Roger C. Wagner Professor of Biological Sciences University of Delaware 28499@udel.edu Dr. Fred E. Hossler Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology East Tennessee State University College of Medicine This page was constructed by Anuj Parikh , MSP class of 1998 In addition, labeled illustrations used in lecture have been digitized and may be used for study purposes. Three dimensional models are often useful for understanding the volume structure represented by two dimensional images and several of these are also linked to this page.

View by Tissues(labs 1-11) View by Organ Systems(labs 12-23) Mission statement: This section is a compendium of images from the histology lab sessions. Since they were made from the some of the same kodachromes that were used to make the Color Atlas of Veterinary Histology (Bacha, Wood), many of the images will be the same as seen in the book. It is organized by labs and easy to quickly navigate through, providing a quick and easy reference to the images presented in lab. Credit goes to Dr. Patricia McManus of the University of PA School of Vet. Med. for the slides in the mammalian/avian blood and bone marrow sections. Some pages require the use of the quicktime plug-in

I have read a lot of criticism ( ) about my flash introduction. These comments are obviously written by those who are clueless as to the goal of this site. Some of these comments come from people who are so ignorant, that they openly claim to not even know what histology is...but nonetheless, they blatantly criticize the means that this site achieves its goals.
The reality is that histology can be a very difficult subject for students to master. It can take hours and hours of studying to learn to distinguish a peripheral nerve from collagenous fibers or to be able to know the histologic difference between the fundic region and the pyloric region. For many students, histology can be tedious, dry and difficult.
The main conceptual goal behind this site (including the tongue-in-cheek flash intro) is not to actually teach histology (although there is ample material presented to learn from) but rather to achieve an intangible ideal.....it is a site for students to come to after hours and hours of looking in a microscope and studying.... a site for them to come to and play...and in the process of having fun, to gain motivation and enthusiasm for the prospect of learning histology.
Those critical of the brazenness of the flash introduction are either so far removed from their field of expertise on Histology-World! or they have an extremely rigid way thinking. They are unable to comprehend the nexus between a loud, obnoxious, fun, humorous, and colorful flash introduction and a site where you can send your loved one a birthday card with a sudoriferous gland on it.

The Histology course was developed for students entering the health professions. The course offers an introduction to the light microscopic structure of tissues and organs. Each topic corresponds to scheduled lectures and laboratory sessions. There are 23 lessons in all. When entering each lesson the students is given information about the lesson. Beginning students are encouraged to go through each Lab Intro sequentially. The left side of the screen contains a description of the image displayed on the right. Words in red describe certain structures on the image. Words in blue boxes further describe a particular structure for the advanced learner. Words in dark blue highlight structure-function correlates and selected histopathology which are included in many lessons in order to emphasize normal structure and function. From the text screen the student can view the image displayed in a magnified view. This view also offers a movable scrolling text field so that you can view the enlarged image and compare the text to the image. Intermediate and advanced level students can use a directory to randomly jump to particular text/image combinations
