Information on the plants and their botany, the range of the genus, climatic requirements, and cultivation.
http://www.coffeeresearch.org/agriculture/main.htm
Introduction Coffee plants belong to the botanical genus Coffea in the family Rubiaceae, which has 500 genera and over 6,000 species. Although there is some disagreement, the number of species belonging to Coffea ranges from 25 to 100. Most commercial green coffee is either the C. arabica or C. canephora species, which is referred to commercially as Arabica and Robusta, respectively. Coffea arabica is an allotetraploid inbreeder (2 n = 44). Forty to fifty cultivars (infraspecific taxa) are known, and are suspected to be derived from two cultivars of C. arabica being var. arabica (including var. typica) and var. bourbon Arabica coffee is grown at altitudes over 2,000 (usually 4,000-6,000) feet above sea level and is typically harvested by hand when the cherries are perfectly ripe. Robusta has continued its share in the market due to its disease resistance and ability to grow below 2,000 feet. Robusta beans are inferior to Arabica beans in flavor, and they are often used in inexpensive instant coffee blends. Robusta coffee has almost twice the caffeine of Arabica coffee. Italians often will use a very small amount of Robusta coffee to increase crema and to tone down the acidity of the Arabica coffees.

LIFE SCIENCES EAST, HOME OF OSU BOTANY Faculty and Staff Locale and Resources Admission Information Botany Department Handbook OSU's program in botany provides undergraduates with a program that introduces many aspects of the discipline. Graduate students benefit from programs tailored to meet the interests and needs of individual students. Areas of study include plant physiology, taxonomy, ecology, developmental genetics, and cellular biology. Numerous related programs on campus (e.g. Forestry, Range Science, Zoology, Plant Pathology, Environmental Sciences, Plant Sciences, Horticulture, Soil Science, Agronomy, Microbiology) contribute to a thorough graduate experience at OSU. Openings for graduate students are available in the laboratories of most of our faculty. We eagerly seek dedicated botanists for our graduate programs. We are able to provide teaching assistantships (if not research assistantships or scholarships) to almost all qualified applicants. Please contact faculty members directly to ask about openings.

ABAXIAL

Abaxial means being located on the side away from the axis . The abaxial surface of a leaf is its underside. ABSCISIC ACID Abscisic acid is a plant hormone that inhibits growth, causes the abscission of leaves, induces dormancy, closes stomata, and triggers other phenomena in response to adverse conditions. ABSCISSION Abscission is the normal separation of a leaf , fruit, or flower from a plant. Abscisic acid is the plant hormone involved in abscission. ABSCISSION ZONE The abscission zone is the area at the base of leaf's petiole, a fruit stalk, or a branch in which the separation (abscission) layer develops. The disintegration of this layer causes a leaf , fruit, or flower to fall from a plant. Abscisic acid is the plant hormone involved in this process.

  • A Guide to the use of Terms in Plant Pathology - The efforts of committees and individuals who have attempted in the past to provide widely acceptable definitions of terms commonly used in plant pathology have achieved only limited success, not necessarily because the definitions have been bad, but because plant pathologists have failed to make good use of them. Several reasons can be suggested; because lists of definitions have generally been published in journals, and have to be sought amongst remote back-numbers; because some definitions have been so terse that the proper limits of their applicability have not always been clear; because of valid differences of opinion between schools of thought, and of conflicting definitions in different lists; through lack of awareness that such lists exist, and through failure to appreciate that precision in the communication of facts and ideas is no less important than precision of observation and experimentation. pop (Added: 16-Apr-1999 Hits: 842)
