Early Settlement
In , Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company arrived at the Cape of Good Hope after receiving instructions to set up an outpost en route to Asia for trade. Although privately owned, the Dutch East India Company was given authority by the Dutch Government to colonise territories and enslave the Indigenous people as workers. Initially, the Dutch established good relations with the Khoikhoi and San, Indigenous people living in South Africa. Most of the settlers were simply traders, so they never built permanent settlements. Even so, many of the Khoikhoi and San were used as cheap labour, in addition to slaves brought over from India and West Africa. The most immediate result of this settlement was disease and dispossession. The Europeans brought new diseases, such as smallpox and measles, to the Cape causing the deaths of many Indigenous people. Those that remained were enslaved to work as cheap labour. The growing European population also demanded more land for agriculture and development. By the early 1700s , the Khoikhoi had lost most of their land to the Boer settlers.

A living legend Zulu / South Africa Culture Link: South Africa Culture
Zululand is synonomous with its rich South Africa cultural wealth amongst its indigenous population the Zulu people. The Zulus originated from a variety of nomadic bantustan tribes who were galvanised into an immense army of skilled and disciplined warriors by the famous Zulu chieftan Chaka who during his reign as King of the Zulu conquered and pacified a territory larger than Europe. Whilst this military heritage is still held with great pride amongst the Zulu they are once more a peaceful people who have preserved their rich cultural identity that is still a very important part of the Zulu's modern day lifestyle. The best way to experience this fascinating South Africa culture is to visit a cultural village where in a relitavely short space of time one can take a guided walk through a traditional homestead and gain an insight into the many aspects of this fascinating and colourful african tribe. One can expect to see Zulu dancing, bead and basket craft, visit a traditional healer and see traditional architecture and kraal design. For those with a strong constitution may like to partake in some home brewed sorghum beer and even enjoy some African barbecue cuisine after your tour. There is a cultural village near Hluhluwe River Lodge and visits can be arranged on arrival.

INTRODUCTION
I have pleasure in presenting South Africa [ZA] to the interested traveller. My experience has proved that for full enjoyment when touring South Africa [especially for the first time] visitors should try and keep to the basics Plan the trip in outline[although you might want to be flexible in your movements, and it doesn't mean a fixed itinarary] [2] The more knowledge/information you have the better. Remember that ZA is a large country and the quicker you travel, the less you will experience/see. If you have limited time [say less than 14 days] only plan to tour a part of ZA and go back again later. This article on South Africa will be produced in different sections and parts which will be released at regular intervals over the weeks to come. Starting with an overview of the whole country with very general comments, the articles, as they become more involved in the regions, cities, towns, villages, places of interest, "must see" places, will become more and more explicit and detailed.
General
Roads:
The road system is good - from modern city freewways to gravel country roads. There are only a few instances where a 4 wheel drive would be required on the roads. The top speeed limit is 120 kph [on a freeway] to 60 kph in the cities.

I'm walking along the grubby streets of Hillbrow - the most notorious suburb of Johannesburg. Suddenly there is an ear-piercing bang. I jump out of my skin and squeal. I expect to feel warm blood oozing down my leg. But no, no blood, no pain: I've simply stepped on an ice-block wrapper and it's popped! People around me laugh and I laugh with them, climb down the lamppost, compose myself and carry on walking through the sunny streets crowded with hawkers selling colourful pyramids of fruit on plastic plates. I feel pleased to be alive in this buzzy place. This is South Africa - land of anecdotes, shootings, car-hijackings and muggings. Yet during the four weeks I was there I didn't experience, see or even take part in any crime, despite staying in Hillbrow for several nights. As Dale, manager of the Cloudbreak Backpackers hostel in Cape Town says, "People mustn't be too paranoid, not too overcome with fear. Just ask hostel staff for advice. The only incident we've heard of in the last few months is a backpacker who had his camera stolen." But don't get me wrong, it's not so gentle that it's boring. A journey in a minibus 'taxi' (variously referred to as 'combi' or 'black' taxi) with the hubbub of laughter and voices interspersed with people popping bubble-wrap will prove that.

Monday, March 18, 2002 Birth of an African opera By Charmaine Pretorius A N AFRICAN opera about the life and times of a Zulu princess, who became world famous for her music without ever leaving her home in rural KwaZulu-Natal, will have its world premier in South Africa later this year. Not only will this opera be a first for the continent, it could also pave the way forward for the birth of an African operatic genre, created by Africans about Africans, binding the art form to the continent. According to Opera Africa chief executive Sandra de Villiers, the only hope for the future of this art form in Africa is to create an operatic genre to reflect the rich history of the continent and its peoples. "We have to show that it is not an elitist European art form. It is an art form that can create work for our people." Based on the life of Mntwana (Princess) Constance Magogo kaDinuzulu, daughter of King Dinuzulu KaCetshwayo and mother to Home Affairs Minister Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the opera will be one of the biggest projects of its kind ever undertaken in South Africa. Last week eThekwini mayor Obed Mlaba, together with Durban Africa, gave R200000 to Opera Africa towards the production.
