The Avesta is the holy book of the adherents of Zarathustra, the Zoroastrians or -as they call themselves today- Parsi's. The Avesta was codified c.600 CE, but this library of sacred texts contains older material, such as the 's . These hymns were probably written in the fourteenth or thirteenth century BCE, almost two millennia before the codification of the Avesta, and most scholars think that they were composed by the prophet Zarathustra himself. In a vision (click here ), he was ordered by a spirit named Good Thought to start preaching against the bloody sacrifices of the traditional Iranian cults and to give aid to the poor. Gradually, the prophet began to understand that Good Thought had been sent by the supreme god Ahuramazda, a name that can be translated as Wise Lord. Zarathustra sometimes addresses his god as Ahura , lord, and as Mazda , wisdom.

With the rise of Islam and the conquest of Persia by Arabs, large numbers of devout followers of Zoroastrianism fled to India, where they were given refuge by the native Hindu ruler. Their descendants, the Parsees, are concentrated in and around Bombay. Only about 130 thousand Zoroastrians are thought to exist today, most located in India, Iran and small enclaves in the West. zoroastrian news resources Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance Zoroastrian Page

Z oroastrianism is the religious doctrine attributed to Zoroaster which gradually became the prevalent religion of Iran and notably was the State religion under the Sasanian dynasty (A.D. 211-640). It is still professed by the Parsis of Bombay and by some sporadic communities in Persia. Zoroastrianism is one of the most interesting religions of the world. Its doctrines and rites are well known either in their present form or as they are to be found in the Pahlavi books and in the Avesta (q.v.) I. Zoroaster (Zarathushtra). There is much obscurity concerning the person of the founder and the time and place of his preaching. Although the Avesta is the Zoroastrian Bible, it is quite certain that only a small portion of the book can with probability be regarded as the work of the prophet. That portion is the Gathas In the Gathas Zoroaster appears as a very real and human personality, devoid of all the marvellous features which surround him in later literature. He is presented there as the son of Pourushaspa of the Spitama family. For ten years he had only one disciple, Maidhyoimaonha his cousin. At last he converted to his doctrine Vishtaspa, a local prince; but the Gathas xvarenanh (= O. Pers.

Zoroaster and Zoroastrians in Iran First taught amongst nomads on the Asian steppes around 3500 years ago, Zoroastrianism is one of the earliest revealed religions and is of enormous importance in the history of religions. It has links with the ancient Vedic beliefs of India and even possibly to a remote Indo-European past. It has influenced northern Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam and was the state religion in Iran from 6 th century BC to 7 th century AD. Most information about prophet Zoroaster (Zarathushtra, Zardosht), son of Pourushaspa, of the Spitaman family comes from the Gathas, 17 hymns which were composed by the prophet and were preserved over the centuries by the Zoroastrian community. Gathas are inspired passionate utterances many addressed directly to God and their poetic form is the most ancient in Iranian literary works. The language is traced back to Indo-European times through Norse parallels. His teachings were handed down orally from generation to generation. They might have been written down since Parthian period but all that is left is from the Sassanian times, in Middle Persian, also called Pahlavi. Afterlife existed and all mortal souls would be resurrected and then judged. They would be punished or rewarded depending on actions during their lifetime. Departed souls crossed a bridge (Chinvat Bridge in Avesta, Sarat Bridge in Quran) and were questioned by divinities to see if they were worthy of entering Paradise, a sunlit place where all imaginable delights were possible. The sinful and the guilty would fall off the bridge and end in the subterranean kingdom of Hell. The concepts of Hell, a place of torment presided over by Angra Mainyu (Ahriman, Shaytan in Koran); Heaven, resurrection and individual judgement are Zoroaster’s own. These doctrines deeply influenced the later religious developments in the area, i.e. Judo-Christian and Islamic traditions.

Human beings have free will to choose between Ohrmazd and Ahriman, however once this choice is made it is impossible or nearly impossible to change. Back to Home Page or Contents Page or Religions and Sects or Index Zoroastrianism Z oroastrianism is the doctrine or teaching of Zarathustra that is also known as Mazdaism, Bah Din, Parsiism, and Fire-worship. The doctrine was founded by the Persian prophet Zoroaster or Zarathustra about 630-541 BC. While still a young man he began having conversations with Ahura Mazdah (the "Lord of Wisdom") from whom he received revelations. He gained some converts among his relatives, but it was after years of struggle with priests of the established cults of the time that he acquired any success. This was mainly because of the influence of the ruler Vishtaspa, or Hystaspis (521 BC). Originally the primary propose of his religion was to help the people of his homeland. They were cattle herders wanting to unite against nomadic marauders and practitioners of sacrificial cults. However the religion grew in doctrine and influence. The classical teachings were profoundly ethical and envisioned the universe and humanity on earth engaged in a constant struggle between good and evil, or light and darkness. Humankind was urged to choose between Ahura Mazda, the God of light, truth and righteousness; and Ahriman , the Devil, the god of darkness, falsehood and evil, or otherwise known as Angra Mainya.

(1) An Ancient Pedigree The old Aryan Religion
"In ancient India, Iran and elsewhere, Dumezil found that the 'ideology' of a tripartite division of society parallel to a tripartite classification of the gods was prominent.... Among the Aryans, then later the Indians, Mithra and Varuna represented respectively the juridical and magical aspects of the first function, the province of priests. The second function, the martial spirit or force, was the domain of the warriors and the god Indra, while the third function, that of fecundity or growth, was the concern of farmers and husband men."
"From cuneiform sources one could surmise that Aryan bands first came into Mesopotamia with the general movement of peoples after the death of Hammurabi in the seventeenth century BC. This is also the time of the expansion of the Hurrians, a people whose linguistic and ethnic affiliations are puzzling; in any case, they are not Indo-Europeans. They formed an important empire called Mitanni, and it is principally among the Mitanni that Aryan names and words occur....In a famous treaty between the Hittite ruler Suppiluliuma and the Mitanni king, Mattiwaza, about 1370 BC, the Aryan gods Mithra, Varuna, Indra and the twin Nasatyas are mentioned. Thus in the Mitanni kingdom Aryan gods were worshipped as well as Mesopotamian deities, which would indicate an Aryan element, but probably only among the rulers."
"Since the Aryan bands in India fought among themselves as well as against the non-Aryans in Iran, and there must have resulted considerable mixtures of various peoples."

F EW persons are capable of appreciating the truly beautiful and esthetic; fewer still of revering those monumental relics of bygone ages, which prove that even in the remotest epochs mankind worshipped a Supreme Power, and people were moved to express their abstract conceptions in works which should defy the ravages of Time. The Vandalswhether Slavic Wends, or some barbarous nation of Germanic racecame at all events from the North. A recent occurrence is calculated to make us regret that Justinian did not destroy them all; for it appears that there are still in the North worthy scions left of those terrible destroyers of monuments of arts and sciences, in the persons of certain Russian merchants who have just perpetrated an act of inexcusable vandalism. According to the late Russian papers, the Moscow arch-millionaire, Kokoref, with his Tiflis partner the American Crœsus, Mirzoef, is desecrating and apparently about to totally destroy perhaps the oldest relic in the world of Zoroastrianismthe "Attesh-Gag" of Baku. Over an area of somewhat more than a square mile, a tract known as the "Fiery Field," upon which the structure stands, if one but digs from two to three inches into the sandy earth, and applies a lighted match, a jet of fire will stream up, as if from a spout.

Religion of the Week: Zoroastrianism
I read with interest last week that the government was recommending consultation with "faith groups" in the determination of policy issues in the future. As the Guardian put it "officials should consult all relevant groups, including minorities such as Zoroastrians and Pagans, as well as representatives of mainstream religions and secularists, in drawing up policy." Curious as to which policy issues would affect Britain's 10,000 Zoroastrians as a group, and thus require government consultation with them, I decided to do a bit of research. I present it as this Friday's Religion of the Week. Zoroastrianism is one of the earth's older religions. Its founder
