Summer 2002: Zoroastrians Meet, Look to Future

Discuss Zoroastrianism
Religious Rituals?
"Zarathushtra never taught or said anything about rituals; rather he said we should think all things through, again implying that rituals were to be thought thru too, that is to be had as an aid to doctrine. A doctrine that is dedicated to renovating the world and making mortals progress to a better existence, therefore all the mindless ritualism of books such as the Vendidad, could not posible be progressive revelation." ashai Respond Plus: Questions about Zoroastrianism Start your own topic RESOURCES Avesta.org

"Zoroastrianism is the oldest of the revealed world-religions, and it has probably had more influence on mankind, directly and indirectly, than any other single faith." - Mary Boyce, Zoroastrians: Their Religious Beliefs and Practices (London: Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1979, p. 1) "Zoroaster was thus the first to teach the doctrines of an individual judgment, Heaven and Hell, the future resurrection of the body, the general Last Judgment, and life everlasting for the reunited soul and body. These doctrines were to become familiar articles of faith to much of mankind, through borrowings by Judaism, Christianity and Islam; yet it is in Zoroastrianism itself that they have their fullest logical coherence....” - Mary Boyce, Op. Cit. p. 29. We provide the complete text of the extant Avesta , the most ancient scriptures of Zoroastrianism, as well as many Pahlavi scriptures. It also includes information about the Avestan language, and other useful information for students of Zoroastrian religion. Most of the texts in these archives are extremely rare. WHAT IS ZOROASTRIANISM?
A brief overview
Zoroastrianism is a religion founded in ancient times by the prophet Zarathushtra, known to the Greeks as Zoroaster. Zoroastrianism was the dominant world religion during the Persian empires (559 BC to 651 AC), and was thus the most powerful world religion at the time of Jesus. It had a major influence on other religions. It is still practiced world-wide, especially in Iran and India. To quote Mary Boyce, "The prophet Zarathushtra, son of Pourushaspa, of the Spitaman family, is known to us primarily from the Gathas Zoroastrians, Their religious beliefs and practices , London, 1979, pg 17. Some of the major tenets of Zoroastrianism include:
God: Ahura Mazda
The supreme being is called Ahura Mazda (Phl. Ohrmazd), meaning "Wise Lord." Ahura Mazda is all good, and created the world and all good things, including people. He is opposed by Anghra Mainyu (Phl. Ahriman)

- Sought Refuge in India from Annihilation at the hands of Islam

Table of Contents A community in whose religious ceremonies the invocation of fire occupies the central place, who wear the sacred thread, whose ancestors worshipped gods named Mitra Vayu, Veretraghna, whose society was traditionally divided into various orders of priests, warriors and peasants, who consider themselves descendants of the Aryans - a race which originally lived in the sub-Artic regions near the North Pole - this obviously is a description of the Aryan settlers of India. Yes, but it applies equally well to the ancestors of the inhabitants of Iran and the Zoroastrian Parsis who migrated from Iran and settled in India around 900 C.E. In talking about the ancient history of the Parsis, we have to begin at the same point as we would when we talk of the history of the Vedic Aryan immigrants of India. Racially Zoroaster was of the Indo-European stock which about 2000 B.C.E. had divided into two great sections. One was spreading west to settle in Europe. This is also called the Cetum group by historians from the Latin word Centum meaning, a hundred. The other group of Aryans moved east and further divided itself into two groups. This eastward bound group is called by historians the Shatem group from the Sanskrit Shatam for 100. Of these east bound Aryans one group settled in what is now India and the other in the land we now call Iran.

The Zoroastrian Religion, by many perceived to be an ancient Persian religion only, is in fact the First Universal and Monotheist Religion in History.
Restored Zoroastrianism brings the Good Religion back to the World. It is not an oriental mystic sect or cult, but a World Religion for all Mankind.
Suppressed and forgotten by the World during thousands of years, it is time to recall that God was realized in the Profound Teachings of Zoroaster, a thousand and more years before any prophet brought "divine revelations".
Where later prophets described God in rather "human" terms, Zoroaster never did. He realized a Supreme Being, who is independent of being worshipped and obeyed and thus ...

Quotation:
" Zoroastrianism is the oldest of the revealed world-religions, and it has probably had more influence on mankind, directly and indirectly, than any other single faith ." Mary Boyce.
Introduction:
Zoroastrianism is a small religion with about 140,000 members. Yet its importance to humanity is much greater than its current numbers might suggest, because: Their theology has had a great impact on Judaism, Christianity and other later religions, in the beliefs surrounding God and Satan, the soul, heaven and hell , savior, resurrection , final judgment, etc. It is one of the oldest religions still in existence, It may have been the first monotheistic religion. The religion was founded by Zarathushtra (Zoroaster in Greek; Zarthosht in India and Persia). Conservative Zoroastrians assign a date of 6000 BCE to the founding of the religion; other followers estimate 600 BCE. Historians and religious scholars generally date his life sometime between 1500 and 1000 BCE on the basis of his style of writing. He lived in Persia, modern day Iran. Legends say that his birth was predicted and that attempts were made by the forces of evil to kill him as a child. He preached a monotheism in a land which followed an aboriginal polytheistic religion. He was attacked for his teaching, but finally won the support of the king. Zoroastrianism became the state religion of various Persian empires, until the 7th Century CE.
