Please Help Save the Elephants at SF Zoo Zoo must send elephants to sanctuary before it's too late! On Sunday, March 7, 2004, the San Francisco Zoo euthanized Calle, a 37-year-old Asian elephant, who had been at the Zoo for seven years. Calle was taken from the wild (Asia) when she was roughly one year old. In the wild, Calle would be in the prime of her life, but at the Zoo she suffered from degenerative joint problems, lameness and chronic infections of her feet. At the end of her life, Calle's condition had deteriorated so badly that she had trouble walking and was constantly dosed with painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs. On April 22, 2004, another elephant at the zoo43-year-old Maybelledied, just seven weeks after Calle's untimely death. Tinkerbell and Calle at San Francisco Zoo. The Zoo blamed Calle's problems on the time she spent in the circus, but Maybelle and the zoo's two surviving elephantsTinkerbelle, an Asian, and the African elephant and Luluhave spent virtually their entire lives in San Francisco (after being taken from the wild as babies in the 1960's specifically for the zoo). Magazine Save the tiger One way we can save the tiger is to protect the biodiversity of sanctuaries, for that can sustain both man and nature. THE widespread worry about the fast dwindling wildlife of the country has been alleviated to some extent by the establishment of wildlife sanctuaries and National parks. However, reports from several of these "protected areas" have said that people living in and around the forests were unhappy as they often had to suffer outright eviction or a total or partial loss of livelihood. Additionally, there were reports of increased attacks by wild animals in the villages bordering parks and sanctuaries. The result was that the incipient wildlife protection movement soon had a conflict on its hands. Realisation dawned within the movement that people who were adversely affected by the creation of National parks and sanctuaries had rights that had to be taken into account if the forests had to be saved. Here, the Joint Forest Management at Chamanathan, started a year ago, has adopted a novel idea of converting about 70 acres of revenue land adjoining the sanctuary and allotting it to people who were otherwise engaged in wood cutting, cattle grazing, honey collection and minor poaching. Under this scheme, about 40 families consisting of approximately 175 people have each been allotted houses. The entire area has been solar-fenced, each family issued with leased land in which they cultivate ragi, beans and vegetables. A notable feature of this cultivation is that no pesticides are used. The produce is sold in Ooty at the Uzhavar Sandhai. Additionally, each family has been given one milking buffalo and the milk is sold at the co-operative society making each family self-sustainable. The good news is that these people no longer enter the adjoining sanctuary or the Reserve Forest for their livelihood.

Asian elephant stepped over its enclosure and toppled a child's stroller is just one of several incidents over the past several years that illustrate the need for all zoos to adopt new standards for elephant caring and handling, says Pat Derby, director of northern California's Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). PAWS, a nonprofit organization that provides sanctuary to abused and abandoned captive wildlife, has been advocating safer and more humane standards of treatment for exotic animals for 15 years. Last year Derby testified at a Congressional hearing regarding the issue. She notes that many zoos throughout the country have already adopted safe standards for elephant caring and handling, but in order to safeguard the public and the animals from harm, all zoos must adopt these standards. "Without these precautions, the public and the animals may face great danger," Derby warns. It took nearly three hours to get Hope, the elephant at the Denver Zoo, back in her pen after she panicked during a show at the zoo and stepped over the 3-foot railing around the enclosure she and another elephant share. Fortunately, the 3-year-old child in the baby stroller Hope knocked over was not seriously injured. However, in the last 10 years, several elephants rampaged, injuring and or even killing people. Derby warns that this sort of dangerous situation is possible again anywhere no matter how cautious or caring the animal trainers are.

With Andalas in its animal collection, the L.A. Zoo becomes one of only three zoos in the country to exhibit the critically endangered Sumatran rhinoceros. But the hulking, gently striped Tigger never did quite catch on as a corporate pitch-cat. Stephens' legal problems, which currently prevent him from exhibiting his animals, have also curbed Tigger's professional progress. "He hasn't been out of that pen in five years," says Stephens, gesturing toward the liger's hilltop abode. Stephens – "Top Cat" to his friends – has two youthful lions and one baby tiger tottering around in playpens in his living room; four young tigers, three young lions and one mountain lion caged in his basement; and numerous full-grown big cats, including Tigger, lounging around in a cinder block-and-welded-wire fortress just across the hilltop. He says that over the past 16 years his hilltop ranch near the tiny Washington County hamlet of Woodrow has been home to at least 600 big cats, many of which have been pressed into service as corporate mascots and then sold to federally licensed dealers or permit-bearing exotic pet owners.

Under the huge trees, it was like a park. The myriad of wildlife kept the forest floor clean. There were Kangaroos, Wallabies, Potoroos and Bettongs. There were also Pademelons and Bandicoots. Because of this grazing balance, the huge trees had never seen a fire. It was, indeed, a paradise. When I was ten, we went to live at Niagara Park. I spent most of my time wandering that bushland. I learned about Lyre and Bower Birds, of Snakes and Lizards, and of Eels and Mud Gudgeons. At the age of 12, I saw the first of the foxes and cats invade my bush. I noticed their horrific effect on the animals of the bush. By the time I was 14 years of age, the animals had all gone. The bush then underwent an incredible change. The parkland that allowed me to wander barefoot wherever I wished became a tangled mass of impenetrable undergrowth. At the age of 16, I witnessed the first bushfire I had ever seen. As I watched the wildfire destroy every old tree left, I sensed a feeling of despair for I realised the paradise was gone forever.
