CAPS ARCHIVE
Day of Action Against Zoos 1999 CAPS used the busiest day of the zoo calendar - August Bank Holiday - to launch our biggest ever awareness campaign to highlight the plight of zoo animals. A new package of campaign materials ( video , leaflet and fact sheet Representing the Zoo Industry
All of the photographs and video used in the campaign have been collected by CAPS during the past twelve months making it extremely representative of the UK zoo industry at present. All MPs have been sent a copy of the video and we are receiving positive responses, including a request from an MP to mail the video to every member of the Scottish Parliament - this we are proceeding with. The video and accompanying information is also being offered free to all schools. Remember: Zoos will close once people stop paying to see animals incarcerated. Zoo Protests
On August Bank Holiday Monday, thousands of CAPS leaflets were distributed outside zoos throughout the country. London Animal Action organised a particularly good turnout of up to 100 people outside London Zoo. In addition to the new CAPS leaflet, they distributed their own specifically on London Zoo.

The zoo has drawn criticism from animal rights groups, and now politicians, after two of their four elephants, Calle and Maybelle, died. Calle, a 37-year-old Asian Elephant, was euthanized because of physical ailments on March 7. Maybelle, a 43-year-oldAfrican elephant, died of apparent heart failure last week. "It is in the best interest of the elephants to be relocated to a credible sanctuary where they will have the company of other elephants," Ma said.

There was a part of the zoo with farm animals - ducks, geese, goats, etc. - and they sold little bags of "animal feed crackers" to give them. Obviously they didn't want people feeding the crackers to the other animals. guitarzan :D Funny... did you give it a cracker? elouise I suppose it depends where you come from, what's a cracker? Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority
A unique environment
The Australian continent is a land unlike any other. Its animals, plants and landscapes are the consequences of a slow and lengthy geological process. Estimates put the number of species in Australia at more than one million - with a high proportion occurring only in Australia. Between 55 and 10 million years ago, Australia's continental plate drifted away from Antarctica towards the equator. This journey isolated Australian life forms, presenting them with particular challenges that provided them with a unique evolutionary process.
Diversity of life forms
Australia's landscapes are ancient. The Australian patchwork of different plant alliances growing together provides for survival in different types of soil and extremes of climate. These alliances have provided opportunities for new species of animals to evolve and survive.

Are the tigers of India being hounded to death?
This question started nagging me a couple of years back. Infact it was during my visit to Ranthambore Wildlife Sanctuary, just prior to Bill Clinton's visit. During my visit I witnessed a BBC documentary film team in action. With the full cooperation of the park authorities they had taken over all the spots that tigers were likely to frequent. They were equipped with jeeps, expert guides and sophisticated communication equipment. When a tiger was spotted the word spread and everyone, including the assorted tourists, zeroed on to the poor creature. The lord of the jungle was instantly converted into a circus animal ! If this was the scenario during a routine filming assignment, then one can well imagine the 'tamasha' that took place before and during Clinton's visit. Little wonder that the VIP tiger vanished thereafter!?
More well known people and organisations have made their money and reputations on the blood of the tiger rather than contributed to it's survival. While enhancing their own reputations, the resulting publicity has created a market for the tiger and it's products. Infact, mafias have got involved in the wildlife trade and poaching has increased all over the world. Let us look at some of the other negative aspects of such exploitation of the tiger:

Note: A lot of this article is India specific regarding best areas to shoot etc.
Let's move on for those of you who have now decided to try your hand at it. The first questions most people ask are about equipment and technique. Equipment and technique are obviously important but there are a few things that are equally or maybe more important. These are development of your mindset and skills other than your photographic ones. You have to, if you don't already, start understanding the environment and start learning to look after it. You have to feel that the environment and it's animals are a part of your family. You have to care for it and protect it. Whether you realize it or not but this attachment shows in your work. A lot of people take this in the wrong way. This does not mean that you will have done a good deed by saving a prey from a predator.
There's a lot more that goes into wildlife photography than fancy equipment
Another reason for sending the spectator to the grave is because as a wildlife photographer you will have to slowly learn to predict the unpredictability of wild animals. You have to make a database in your mind of things like expressions that always precede some action. An example of this is the way a tiger's eyes become amazingly focused, ears get drawn back and movements are extremely basic just before it plans to charge. In such a situation, unless you're extremely sure about your safety, it's time to get out of there. It would be better to live to shoot another day than to die shooting maybe an out of focus shot!
