Hi Please will you read this letter and forward it to all your friends; but not the Guide Dogs Assoc or their staff, as it upsets them. We recently saw a Guide Dog Trainer trying to tear her dog's head off with a chain noose. (Graphic description) She used her full strength on the chain noose. She jerked the dog (say 40 kilo) up to about 45 degrees. Then she did it again because I asked her how she would like someone to do that to her. She retorted "It doesn’t hurt a dog!" I wish I had kept my mouth shut. I discredited their investigation. The Chief Executive told the Operations Manager to investigate again. The OM promised to investigate early in this New Year. I have heard nothing. The Guide Dogs locally say, "As far as choke chains are concerned we have simply never used them. We occasionally use check chains." I rarely see their dogs without some kind of noose round their necks. In '99 three dog trainers were done for cruelty. They strung their dogs up by their choke chains and thrashed ‘em. Some dog trainers re-named choke chains as check chains.

"Brilliant. Its clear and unpretentious language and Hancocks' evident passion for and knowledge of his subject made it one of the best books I have read in a long while."Tim Murray, The Age (Melbourne) "This brilliantly researched and persuasive book traces the sociology of animal captivity back to Paleolithic times." Publishers Weekly "The capture and display of wild animals, an ancient and universal phenomenon, embodies a dichotomy, Hancocks explains in this engrossing history of zoos and their role in society. His critique of the miseries associated with their museumlike warehousing of living creatures is electrifying, the perfect lead-in to his discussion of the slow realization that naturalistic habitats are essential to zoo animals' health and happiness." Booklist "[Hancocks] writes authoritatively and compassionately, and fortunately offers some ideas on how to improve zoos for both the animals and the people who visit them."

The Evolving Role of American Zoos in Bat Conservation
Zoo personnel across the country are adopting a new perspective, and the results are benefitting bats: improved exhibits, creative educational programs, and ambitious conservation initiatives . . .
By Nina Fascione For centuries, entertainment was the primary purpose of zoos, though some might say they also served to demonstrate human domination over nature. The origin of zoos can be traced back to Egypt circa 2500 B.C., where they began as private menageries assembled for royalty. The concept of exhibiting animals in captivity eventually spread throughout the world, with the first zoological parks in the United States being established in the mid-1800s. As for most captive animals, the choice of bat species exhibited in zoos was historically based on an individual curator's or director's preference and the species' availability from the wild. Despite some interest on the part of zoo personnel, bats were never a high priority, with the possible exception of vampire bats, which many zoos maintained to fulfill public curiosity. In addition, there was relatively little outreach to educate the public about the natural history and ecological importance of bats.

The reputation of the KSU faculty and the clinical and teaching opportunities which this program provides, also attracts motivated, highly qualified individuals for the Internships/Residencies that the Zoological Medicine service offers. Dr. Siegel-Willott wanted to come here because "it's one of the best known programs around." "The work mix is great, with client-owned exotic pets, zoo animals, and wildlife cases challenging us everyday. It makes for a very exciting time!" Since 2000, the Exotic Medicine Service has also had a successful Master's degree program that partners with the prestigious Conservation and Research Center (CRC) within the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoological Park in Front Royal, Virginia. Of the numerous yearly CVM applications, one is selected to spend their next two summers in Virginia. That means that each year two KSU CVM Master's students travel to Virginia to assist in conducting research studies on endangered species at the CRC.

"The situation is distressing and the steps taken for the welfare of animals in the zoos are far from satisfactory," a bench comprising Chief Justice A S Anand, Justices Santosh Hegde and K G Balakrishnan said. These observations were made during the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by an animal activist, Navin M Raheja, bringing to the court's notice the large-scale poaching in reserve forest depleting tiger population in wild.

WELFARE - We can all do our bit!
Animals and Man
By Christopher Day MRCVS
Animal welfare is a much-debated topic. No end is in sight for some of the awful welfare penalties that animals suffer, as a result of man’s interference. Is there anything, however, that we can do, ourselves? There is the general environment problem, affecting a great many species and soon to affect man himself, more seriously than he’d like to believe. There is competition with man, for much-needed space and food, especially in the Amazon, Africa, South East Asia and India. These are general problems, that must be addressed, especially in terms of how the developed world treats the undeveloped world. Your influence, as a customer of the banks and multi-national companies, can have an effect for the good. The issue about which we can each certainly do something, on a much more personal level, is that of respect for animals. Respect, at a deep and meaningful level, removes the issue of whether animals have ‘rights’. It puts the issue of ‘do we have the right to do what we do?’ more firmly in the limelight. We would not need to legislate or to ask whether something is legal, if we were to be guided in our actions by true respect. With the recent Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak, we saw the terrible holocaust and animal suffering, being enacted in the name of commerce. Animals were dispatched in front of their offspring. Animals were badly shot, owing to the sheer size of the task, and surviving in a pile of corpses overnight. Animals died of exposure, because farmers were not allowed to move them. Do we have the right to do this, purely to preserve a questionably desirable export trade, when vaccination or homœopathy could stop the spread of the virus in days?

When Zoos Tell Lies
By Barry Kent MacKay When you walk into the Sacramento Zoo, about the first thing you encounter is a wide expanse of water, surrounded by vegetation, with an island in the middle. A low fence is all that separates you from the birds therein. Being a fanatic about birds, I find myself drawn to this miniature lake during my zoo visits. As a wildlife artist I benefit from close up looks at these exotic birds. But that does not justify their incarceration. Zoos on the Defensive As the animal rights movement grows in public support, zoos find themselves increasingly on the defensive. Even if you do not oppose the concept of zoos, if you have a gram of compassion you most certainly will have felt uncomfortable about at least some forms of animal imprisonment seen in some zoos. Zoos argue that they serve many different functions that are of value, if not to the individual animals, at least to the species. Indeed, in places where some form of peer accreditation seeks to provide at least minimum standards, it is not supposed to be enough merely to have animals on display, merely to entertain. So what is the purpose of that lake that greets the visitor just past the gate of the Sacramento Zoo?
