Wake Up and Smell the Chemicals

Helpful info and product safer alternatives given, but unfathomably she didn't mention that
one should avoid the use of scented fabric softeners. Nor did Ms. Zellerbach take into account
all of the people who can suffer adverse events due to secondary and tertiary levels of
exposure. As I read this, it was written for the primary user who is developing chemical
sensitization. Remember that synthetic scents are volatile organic compounds, concocted of
tens to hundreds of chemicals from the industry's arsenal of between 3,000 and 5,000
inadequately tested chemicals. We've got to start thinking beyond ourselves to the effects our actions and the products we use can cause to other people and other creatures of our planet. barb

Romantic Rhinos and Victorian Vipers:
The Zoo as Nineteenth-Century Spectacle
by Ashton Nichols
If you could have seen what it was like when I was a boy–half zoo and half museum, my father let us do anything we wanted. For a while we had a big tree in the corner, with live birds roosting in it. Aquariums, and an ant colony, and turtles and salamanders; and jars of preserved specimens everywhere, big slabs of fossil-bearing rock and mastodon bones and a plant press, books open on all the tables. A wonderful, fertile clutter. I begin with a fictional passage from Andrea Barrett’s evocative 1998 novel, The Voyage of the Narwhal . Barrett’s description of her main character, Erasmus Darwin Wells, reflecting here on his childhood memory of the natural history repository his father had created in the early years of the nineteenth-century, captures the mood of a moment that was particularly important in the history of humans relations to the animal kingdom. Natural history cabinets, like zoos and other forms of live or dead animal display, emerged out of precisely the combination of scientific curiosity and fascination with spectacle that is captured in the rhetoric of Barrett’s fictional imagining; to see something new and amazing was to learn something new, but the experience was also about being excited, titillated or amazed by captive animals or the remains of their capture. Kubla Khan’s “pleasure dome” was just such a menagerie. By the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, however, scientific knowledge became the primary justification for private, and eventually public, gatherings and displays of a wide variety of creatures from around the world.

  • Penguins
Penguins are flightless sea birds of the Southern Hemisphere. In all, there are 18 species of penguins, found in South Australia, New Zealand, and off the coasts of Peru, Chile, and South Africa. Some species live as far north as the equatorial Galapagos Islands, but they are primarily cold-weather birds. There are seven species of Antarctic penguins: the Adelie, Gentoo, Macaroni, Chinstrap, Rockhopper, King, and Emperor. The Adelie and the Emperor are the two true Antarctic species.
  • The Penguin Page
There are 16 species of penguins in the world. They inhabit the coastal regions of the southern hemisphere and do not normally extend their ranges above the equator.
  • Penguin Adaptations
Penguins are designed for life in the sea. Some species spend as much as 75% of their lives in the water. (They lay their eggs and to raise their chicks on land.) Heavy, solid bones act like a diver's weight belt, allowing them to stay underwater.

The proprietors of Coventry Stadium have announced that greyhound racing will start at Brandon on the 14 th of April. In view of this, Coventry Against Greyhound Exploitation have organised a demo outside the stadium, starting at 6pm on Wednesday, April 14 th and ending at about 7.30pm. Please do your best to attend, bringing anti greyhound racing banners and placards, if you can. But please, do not bring dogs . It will be dark, the stadium is at the side of a main road, and there is likely to be a lot of traffic and noise. The stadium is situated between the villages of Binley Woods and Brandon, a few miles to the east of Coventry on the A428 Rugby Road. Important note The stadium proprietors have not yet been granted a track betting licence and, so far, no date has been set for the licence application to be considered by Rugby Borough Council. If the licence has not been granted by April 14th, it is very unlikely that greyhound racing will take place on that date and, in that event, the demo will not go ahead. Therefore, if you intend to take part in the demo, please contact Greyhound Action asap at

Our facts and information is perfect for school reports, teachers, Panda Lovers and more! General: Panda Bears, cute and adorable, are on the endangered species list. Their habitat, extremely limited diet and poor reproductive and infant survival combine to extremely threaten their survival. There are two kinds of Pandas. The giant white and black Panda is the one that comes to mind for most of us. But, there is also the Red Panda which is also called the lesser Panda. There are very few Pandas left in the wild and zoologists have been largely unsuccessful in breeding them in captivity up to now. The Chinese government has taken steps to protect these endangered animals. Pandas are only found in a relatively small area in Asia. They date back two to three million years ago . Ancient chinese history and writings abound with mention of the Panda. They were kept by emperors and their hides were highly valued. They carried a mystique and were believed to be able to ward off evil spirits and natural disasters. Pandas live in and around mountainous slopes and exist on a diet largely comprised of bamboo shoots. They eat most of the day to consume the food they need for survival. There are about fifteen types of bamboo, reach with varying life cycles. Panda Bears eat primarily bamboo shoots. As die-offs in the bamboo cycle occur, the panda population also fall.

    80. Zoocheck Canada Inc. - Programs & Projects - Zoo Check - Zoos: Asking The Right
Regardless of how you feel about the value of zoos in general, visitsto zoos are common outings for children across North America.
    http://www.zoocheck.com/programs/zoocheck/questions/
Zoos: Asking The Right Questions by Kate Kempton Most zoos claim to educate visitors about animals and to promote the conservation of wildlife. But if a zoo is to fulfill its mandate to educate the public, it must do far more than merely showcase animals for us to look at. Yet this is all the majority of zoos do. Educating the public about the natural behaviours and lifestyles of animals is extremely difficult if the animals are removed from their natural context and exhibited in unnatural environments. Unfortunately, at many zoos the casual visitor only sees animals which are, at best, bored and boring to watch, and, at worst, acting in an abnormal or self-destructive manner. To be fair, some zoos do make an honest attempt at educating visitors about the lifestyles and relationships of animals, their habitats, and the threats they currently face in the wild. They hope that zoo visitors will leave with an increased respect for wild creatures and a desire to become involved in wildlife and environmental issues. Unfortunately, the majority of visitors leave zoos without learning much of anything; in fact, most zoo patrons are unable to identify even the commonest wildlife species they’ve observed. This focus on viewing caged animals may actually be a barrier to education. Most zoo visitors spend about 30 seconds at each exhibit. They visit the zoo to be entertained, and if they are not enjoying one cage, they quickly move on to another. This rapid pace viewing of animals does little to facilitate learning. And many zoos feed this desire for public entertainment by increasing the number of species, building more exhibits, and looking for unusual ways to draw people through the turnstiles.
