41. Are Zoos Allowed In Islam? What Does Islam Say About Animal Cruelty?
Proverbs 1210 does not address the treatment of animals as Islam does. The verseis too general and too ambiguous if we wish to prohibit zoos through it.

This article contains images of animal fights, captivity and torture. Viewer discretion is advised. My Message and Appeal to you: Animals can roam 100s of square miles. Locking them in cages is worse than life in prison with hard labor! Please say no to Zoos and pets imprisonment (i.e., birds and fishes). Allah Almighty created animals to live in communities like us. This means that He created means of communication and understanding for them (languages as we call it). This simply raises the animals to a level which prohibits us to imprison them and to lock them up for life in zoos: "There is not an animal (That lives) on the earth, Nor a being that flies On its wings, but (forms Part of) communities like you. Nothing have We omitted From the Book, and they (all) Shall be gathered to their Lord In the end. (The Noble Quran, 6:38)

About EFBC/FCC
dedicated to the protection and preservation of the world's endangered felines
Founded in Rosamond, California in 1977, EFBC's Feline Conservation Center is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization run entirely on public donations . Our federal tax ID number is 95-3808610. If you're a US government employee, you can donate with payroll deductions through the CFC program - select cause #03169. Admission fees and renewable yearly memberships are our main form of support. We have changed our name from Exotic Feline Breeding Compound (EFBC) to EFBC's Feline Conservation Center (FCC), so you'll see both names mentioned here. Our Board of Directors is currently composed of:
Joe Maynard, President

Larry Purcell, Vice President

Nicole Pearson, Treasurer

Sandy Masek, Secretary
...
Nancy Vandermey

Home to over 60 of the world's most endangered felines, EFBC/FCC is a breeding zoo. Funds received are used for the care and support of the compound's animals and long-term goals, which include a natural history museum and public education programs. The older cages are slowly being replaced by large natural habitat enclosures that rival those found at the best zoos-check out our current construction page to see what's in progress.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoo
Zoo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A zoological garden, or zoo for short, is a place where wild animals are cared for and exhibited to the public. The first zoos were private menageries, usually belonging to kings. After the French Revolution , the Paris zoo was opened to the public. Over time, the mission of zoos has shifted from simply displaying exotic animals, to scientific study ( London Zoo was the world's first scientific zoo in ), and, latterly, to breeding them, and in particular maintaining populations of animals that are endangered or even extinct in the wild. Most modern zoos keep animals in naturalistic enclosures. These enclosures are large enough for the animals to exercise in, and to have some privacy. Zoo visitors occasionally find this frustrating, but overall the experience is improved both for the animals and for the people who come to see them. Recent clever designs encourage the animals to prefer locations where they can be observed without being aware of it, for instance by having a darkened viewing window at the back of a shelter where the animals go to escape mid-day heat. Many zoos now have special buildings for nocturnal animals, with dim red lighting during the day, so the animals will be active when visitors are there, and bright lights at night to ensure that they sleep.

CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS
OF THE SOUTH EAST ASIAN ZOOS ASSOCIATION (SEAZA)
(Amended in Taiping, Malaysia, 11 October 2001) CONSTITUTION PREAMBLE
We, the South East Asian Zoos Association (SEAZA), is an organisation devoted to the conservation of wildlife, and to the display of wildlife for public education; Believing that every biological species has a right to survival, that humans have an obligation to protect that right, zoos in developing countries are obliged to educate and motivate citizens to care for wildlife and to help preserve their regional biological diversity; Desiring to carry out this obligation by managing animals under our stewardship in conditions that promote their individual wellbeing, genetic diversity of their populations, preservation of their taxa, and conservation of their natural ecosystems, we will strive to:
  • Exhibit animals to the general public in ways that will educate the public at the same time it provides them with a pleasurable leisure-time activity, and that will foster in them respect and empathy towards animals and natural ecosystems; Conduct benign research into the biology and behaviour of species in our care, especially as it will contribute to our ultimate goals of conservation and education;
