Careers in Zoos and Aquariums
Do you love animals? Ever thought about working with animals as a career? Or, maybe you've just wondered what a day in the life of a zookeeper or marine biologist would be like. Read on to find the answers about what it takes to become a zookeeper or marine biologist. Zookeeper Education: In order to become an animal keeper, you will need lots of biology and zoology courses. These courses will teach you different things about animals, such as their habitat and diet and things about their muscles, nervous systems, and bones. Experience:
Aside from educational courses, experience is another good way to gain insight and information about what a zookeeper position involves. You can gain experience by working with a veterinarian, volunteering in an animal shelter, or interning at the local zoo. Salary: Zookeeper's salaries range from minimum wage to over $30,000 a year. A zookeeper's earnings are dependent on the location of the zoo and the position being offered. Most zoos in major metropolitan areas will pay higher than zoos in rural areas. Attitude: Although education and experience are necessary, another component to a zookeeper's job is attitude and personality. Important traits for zookeepers include a being hard worker, having creative skills and a positive attitude, and possessing good communication skills with both people and animals.

Built in 1818, the General Post Office in O'Connell Street was designed by Francis Johnston.
In 1916 an Irish republic was proclaimed from the General Post Office by Padraig Pearse and James Connolly who were leaders of the Easter Rising.

General Sea Life Facts The following questions were answered by whale biologist Sally Mizroch , research biologist Dan Odell, zoo nutritionist Ellen Dierenfeld, and zoo biologist Will Waddell. How would humans measure intelligence in a marine mammal?
Intelligence is a hard thing to measure, even in people. I don't think anyone really knows just how smart the whales and dolphins are. Their environment is so different from ours that I think it would be hard to measure them by our standards. We know they have large brains and appear to use them well. They are very aware of their environment and of all the things around them. I think that's smart. Are many mammals being taken from our oceans to zoos or water parks?
Are we doing more harm than good to sea mammals by keeping them in captivity?
Have there been any new mammals discovered in the past ten years?
Yes, a new species of beaked whale was discovered in Peruvian waters a few years ago. It is the Peruvian beaked whale, Mesoplodon peruviensis.

National News General public can help encouraging better zoos
Tuesday, May 21, 2002 The London-based World Society for the Protection of Animals, WSPA, a non-profit organization promoting animal welfare around the world, recently investigated the condition of animals in several zoos in Indonesia, along with its local counterpart Animal Conservation for Life, KSBK. WSPA's expert Rob Laidlaw shared the organization's findings with The Jakarta Post and offered solutions through an e-mail interview from his Canada office. Question: What are the investigation's crucial findings? Answer: The WSPA/KSBK investigation revealed that a significant portion of Indonesia's zoos are grossly overcrowded. There are simply far too many individual animals for their available space and resources. If these zoos were to reduce the size of their live collections, it would result in an increased level of resources being allocated to a smaller number of animals. This would most certainly have a positive impact on the overall standard of animal husbandry. In addition, as the collections are downsized and some animals vacated, their current residents could be joined with other cages, thereby increasing the amount of space available for the animals that remain.

The Spanish Association of Zoos and Aquaria (AEZA) is a non-profit making organization which brings together all Spanish Zoos and Aquaria believing in the following basic mission: Promote the conservation of nature through scientific and educational endeavours, offering a maximum degree of well-being to the animals they house along with leisure and cultural activities to the public visiting their facilities. At present the Association consists of twenty eight member organizations which follow the recommendations approved by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) regarding the care of animals in zoos and by which standards the members of our Association are bound. AEZA is a member of The Spanish Association of Zoos and Aquaria was founded on 5th May 1988 in Santillana del Mar (Cantabria). A few months previously, the European Community of Zoos and Aquaria (now EAZA) had been created in Rotterdam. From then onwards, most Common Market countries set out to establish their own national-level organizations. Thus began a generalized movement towards the organization of the international zoological community, which understood the need to unite efforts and integrate initiatives in order to channel its enormous educational and conservationist potential in an efficient manner. The predecessor of the Spanish Association of Zoos and Aquaria was the Unión Ibérica de Parques Zoológicos (Iberian Union of Zoos), which no longer exists.

General Policy About Zoos

Since zoos require a significant amount of resources in the form of land, water, energy and money, no new zoo shall be set up unless a sustained supply of resources including finance and technical support are guaranteed.
Zoos shall prepare a long-term master plan for development to ensure optimum utilisation of the land, water, energy and finance.
Every Zoo shall maintain a healthy, hygienic and natural environment in the zoo, so that the visitors get an adequate opportunity to experience a natural environment.
Zoos shall give priority to endangered species in their collection and breeding plans. The order of preference for selection of species shall be (in descending order) locality, region, country and other areas.
Zoos shall regulate the number of animals of various species in their collection in such a way that each animal serves the objectives of the zoo. For achieving this objective, a detailed management plan of every species in the zoo shall be prepared.
Every zoo shall endeavour to avoid keeping single animals of non-viable sex ratios of any species. They shall cooperate in pooling such animals into genetically, demographically and socially viable groups at zoos identified for the purpose.

While France would oscillate among republic, empire, and monarchy for 75 years after the First Republic fell to a coup by Napoleon Bonaparte, the revolution nonetheless spelled a definitive end to the ancien régime , and eclipses all subsequent revolutions in France in the popular imagination.
