It weighs about a hundred pounds, and is about 2 feet tall at the shoulder. To help you imagine the size of a capybara, click on the image to the right to see a picture including a human being (5 ft. tall) for scale. The two capybaras on the right are adults, the rest are juveniles. These pictures, including capybaras eating popcorn, were taken at Southwicks Wild Animal Farm in Mendon, Mass. (south of Worcester) which we recommend highly to the capybara-minded. The next pictures show capybaras engaging in typical behaviors like nursing, swimming, and having their exhibit cleaned at the Montreal Biodome. Also included is an excellent top view of the juveniles. By the way, "capybara" is stressed on the third syllable.

From gardens with a fishpond and a few waterfowl to zoos including giraffes, elephants and bears, many wealthy Egyptians liked to keep wild animals. Exotic animals, rhinos, elephants, bears, giraffes, ostriches - some of which had been indigenous to the country in earlier times - were brought to Egypt by official trading expeditions and as part of the tribute which Nubia and other parts of the empire had to pay their overlord. Bears seem to have attracted mankind since earliest times. Under Sahure (5th dynasty) Syrian bears were brought to Egypt [ ]. These relatively docile bears were kept on leashes. The earliest known captive polar bear was housed by Ptolemy II in his private zoo at Alexandria. Bear, 5th Dynasty

Guide to Animal Sounds on the Net
    New and improved!
    • Reorganized for easy access. Within each order or family, the links to animal sounds are being rearranged by site. This tends to group animals from the same part of the world together, and also makes it easier for me to keep the listing up to date.
    • Non-English names. For the first time, I'm starting to include the names of the animals in languages other than English, as well as the English translation. To display all of these languages on the same page requires Unicode. You may need to upgrade your browser or install special fonts to see these languages (consult the documentation for your browser).
There are many samples of animal sounds on the World Wide Web and FTP sites, but finding them takes some patience and a bit of luck. It can be an interesting exercise to find particular animal sounds through search engines such as Alta Vista or HotBot , but it's much more convenient to have an index specifically for animal sounds. That's why I started this page. I've tried to group related animals together for convenience, and translate non-English ones to the best of my ability, but there will inevitably be some mistakes and discrepancies.

    CAPS ARCHIVE
Tiger death at Howlett CAPS calls for zoo closure after escaped tiger shot dead. Press release 7th December 2001. The Captive Animals' Protection Society today called for a public inquiry and the closure of Howlett's Wild Animal Park in Kent following yet another tragic incident involving the zoo's tigers. Four year old Indian tiger Sariska was shot dead after escaping from her enclosure yesterday. Fortunately the zoo was not open to the public at the time, otherwise the incident could have resulted in the loss of more lives. Two signs at Howlett's Wild Animal Park in memory of the death of keepers by tigers at the zoo. This is just the latest in a series of incidents at the zoo - three keepers have been killed by tigers and we understand that at least two tigers have escaped on previous occasions. Government guidelines on zoos state that "All animals should be kept in enclosures so constructed as to avoid escape", and CAPS is greatly concerned about public safety at this zoo and believes that there may have been infringements of the Zoo Licensing Act. We will be making our concerns known to Canterbury council, the authority that licenses the zoo. Diane Westwood, Executive Director of CAPS, said:
